This to prevent moisture getting in critical areas such as ignition coil pack, secondary aux air pump and debris getting inside the alternator cooling ports beside minimizing road noise. A good place to call would be a junkyard or VW recyclers or VW forums classifieds e.g. VWvortex.com

What is the purpose of the black plastic cover on the underside of the volkswagon beetle, and how important is it to the cars operation

This is a dust/splash shield. Keeps dirt and water off the engine. Car will work without it but will get dirty and there is some risk for splashing water on electrical parts. This could cause a temporary malfunction, but would usually be OK after drying out. The risk of a problem is really rare.

Change oil,

Most like you have a shield underneath, and wll require a 10mm socket wrench. The filter is the triky devil, cos its prob a canister and not a normal metal filter. It should be close to the pan, but if not look around the front under the radiator, or behind one of the front tires. I suggest having a really good filtewr wrench for it though.

The warning light above the airbag light on the dash. 2002 VW

Malfunction indicator light it is the symbol of your engine with a line of suffering and the word "CHECK" -- this could be something minor like needing a spark plug to be replaced (common problem) or to something more serious like engine electrical work needed. a flashing engine light is the more serious so you are not to worry.

Battery replacement

Easy replacement. The battery is located underneath the fuse block in the engine compartment. Stores like AutoZone will replace your battery free of charge if you purchase the battery from them. Personally, I like the Sears Die-Hard, but they charge a nominal fee. Probably not the original battery after all these years, so check for a warranty replacement by looking for the earlier receipt.

I have a 2001 beetle. A week ago my car ck engine light and temperature light came on and stated singing. I had oil added and oil changed along with fluids. code read sensor needed replacing. had oil and...

I had the same problem on my 2000 beetle and I had to change the water pump . Once you change the water pump you have to change the timing belt because the water pump is run by the timing belt .
you could know if it is the water pump by checking the hose that comes from the radiator to the enging to se if there is water running to the engine .

Yes you can add oil as you go. this will be fine. Just dont make a habit of it as you can never tell where your oil level is without looking at the dipstick.

Engine light not coming on ! 2000 beetle

The engine light is only going to come on if the ECM detects a problem. The first time the light came on, a code was set. Now that the engine light isn't coming on isn't a bad thing. For what ever reason, the ECM is not detecting a problem so the engine light is not going to come on. Induce a code by unplugging the MAF sensor or MAP sensor and make the engine light come on. This will tell you that the ECM is in fact detecting problems and you engine light bulb isn't burnt out. When the engine light did come on, it could have been something that was intermittend and is not having a problem anymore.
