Question about 2003 Saturn L-Series

1 Answer

Service wrench come on then the car starts jerking as it changes gears. When you turn car off it resets itself and it might be a day or so before it happens again. It is a 2002 SL300 . This has been happening for a couple of years. I've taken it to Saturn for a look see and they say they can't access once it resets itself when I turn it off.

Best thing to do next time it comes on, stop at any autozone and they will pull codes for you for free, do not turn car off as you know it will clear codes.

Turn wrench off on 2013 accord seden

The wrench tells you that you need an oil change, or other servicing. You can check in your user manual for the procedure. For my Honda vehicle, I hold the odometer reset button until the wrench starts flashing, then I release the reset button for a fraction of a second, then press it again until the wrench turns off. You will need to hold it for about 10 seconds at first, before it starts flashing. You might need to have the ignition switch on, without the motor turning.

Have your error code read (if the CEL is coming on, there should be one stored in the computer). Some auto parts stores will plug in a reader and pull the code for free. Your transmission could be going bad or it could be as simple as a gear pressure/speed sensor wearing out (which is a relatively inexpensive fix), but the error code should help you figure out what's going on.

So you can race the engine in neutral, and no problem with it trying to die? If that's so, I think you need a clutch job. A clutch disc contaminated with oil or grease will cause jerking and slipping.

You indicated that the transmission starts jerking after a long drive.

With the mileage on your vehicle, and the possible sandy conditions that it is driven in, your automatic transmission fluid may be fouled, also causing the jerky shifting with extended operation.

A thorough cleaning of the transmission case interior and inspection of your gears are in order. You could prevent this similar situation after repairs by replacing your ATF more often that required by your service manual.

Hope this helps.
