Brake light is working but not the tail light?

There are three fuses involved.
There is a 25 amp fuse before the brake switch located in the fuse box under the hood. Then there are two 15amp fuses after the brake switch in the box inside the cabin. One is for the lower brake lights and the other is for the high mount light and the trailer connector.
You would need to know if the 15amp fuse for the lower lights has power when the brake pedal switch is applied.

To address the first; did someone try to install a new radio? The only way that something could be hitting the inside of the wheel(with stock size wheels and tires) is if the ball joint was about ready to fall out and the top of the tire was hitting the struts coil seat. If this is the case, this is extremely dangerous. I can walk you through replacement of these components and you can save yourself some money. The lower ball joint is very easy to replace and runs about $25. Let me know.

The box is closed and even with the lid off ,you wouldn't short anything. I will look at my 2004 tomorrow. Forget bouncing a can off it. You got starting issues to work on,just a coincidence.

You are missing all the lights on the rear of the truck ?

The trailer tow adapter runs to a common ground ( see when you take the spare tire down ), that is used for quite a few things.

If you do not have lights on the back of the truck, take a look there, it might not have been bolted back to the frame.

Rear door light is on (SUZUKI VITARA)

The light button to the door is not pushed in enough to turn off. Tape it up or just may need a little WD 40, from just sticking.
