Question about 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS GS LCM headlights

THIS IS ON MY 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS GS. THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE FAILED AND MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR 5 TO 10 MINUTES. THEY CONTINUE TO DO THIS UNTIL THE SYSTEM WOULD COOL DOWN AND RESET ITSELF, TAKING 15 TO 30 SECONDS. I HAVE BEEN TOLD I NEED TO HAVE THE LCM REPLACED COSTING OVER $500.00 FOR JUST THE PART. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT WHEN HE CALLED THE DEALER THEY STATED THAT THEY ALWAYS KEEP THEM IN STOCK BECAUSE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. MY QUESTION IS WHY IS THIS NOT A RECALL ITEM??? THE HEADLIGHTS GOING OUT WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT NIGHT MUST BE A SAFETY ISSUE?

If you have a 1999-2011 Mercury Marquis, Mercury Marauder, or Crown Victoria, and your headlights and or tail lights don\'t work, Ford just finally extended the warranty on your LCM (Lighting Control Module) for free - both parts and labor and will install a new one for free! Ford has extended the warranty to 15yrs/250,000. Must be done at Ford and the fix is free. Call your local Ford Dealer and tell them you need to make an appointment because your lights don\'t work and Ford has extended your warranty on the LCM. Tell them it is the Customer Satisfaction Program 14N01. Have your Vin number ready as they will ask for it. If they act ****** ask to talk to the manager or tell them to call Ford Motor Company and ask them or you can call Ford yourself. We just had ours done on 8-12-14 in Scottsdale, AZ. If you have a 99 you better get there before Oct. 14th, 2014 as it is a 15 year warranty.

I've read a number of LCM posts for Grand Marqius. Repairing them is all the buzz on Ebay --- pay $50+ and various vendors will "replace" 4 relays on one of the boards in the LCM. Don't open the box though, because doing so will void the "lifetime" warranty for the fix. Here is what I found when mine went bad. The specs on the NEC relays indicates that their service life is a bazillion operations before failure. They can be had off the internet for about $6 a piece. Of course, why replace one if you already have the unit out and opened (that is if you could determine which individual one has failed). I recalled reading somewhere in my research of this problem that a cause of this LCM failure was a soldering problem on the boards during manufacture. My brother-in-law used to fix TV's and we discussed the issue. We looked at the relays on the board and found micro fractures along the edges of the solder where the relay pins extend through the circuit boards. We heated the pins to melt the existing solder and added more solder to the 20 pins on the board. Problem solved!!! LCM works great. No more headlight failure. No replacement parts! I'd strongly suggest you attempt this fix before sending your unit out or exchanging it

I had same problem, this is a very common problem on Gran M. If you go to ebay you will find companies that you can mail your LCM to them and they will repair it with a life time warranty for as cheap as $50 bucks. They even pay for return shipping and the turnaround is about a week!
Ford makes a lot of money on replacing this part, why would they recall it? By the way, normally your headlights will still work when they go out if you manually hold back the bright lever on left of the steering wheel shaft. ( Like you were going to flick you brights at another car.) This will at least get you home or to an exit...

If the high and low beams do not come on, yet the lights do energize when you hold the "flash to pass" lever towards you, then it probably is the LCM (Light Control Module...) And there is now VERY GOOD NEWS!!! Ford just started fixing them for FREE!!! (Ref: Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 14N01) Ford/Lincoln/Mercury has finally decided to deal with the rat-nasty LCM's they have been putting out. I just got the letter on this from Ford last week. Without starting a safety recall, (as they should,) they are extending the warranty on the LCM (based upon VIN number,) to 15 years or 250,000 miles whichever comes first. AND if you paid earlier for this replacement and have the receipt, they will REIMBURSE you for the repair provided it was done before the notice came out. The window to be reimbursed for an earlier repair looks to be between April 1st, 2014 to October 31st, 2014. This window also applies if your car is under 15 years, yet has exceeded 250,000 miles. Ford's LCM replacement is completely without charge for parts and labor. Retail owners should have their VIN number handy and call the local Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealership for an appointment. They say it should take a half a day yet could be longer due to dealer "service scheduling requirements." They will only replace LCM's that do not work, but mine lasted 10 years before it started acting up. This gives Ford a way to show concern, without really dealing with the 1000's of LCM's that will fail after this window closes in the future. Ford only "invented" their LCM after their service departments were losing money on a system that smaller repair shops could easily fix. Nice to have a little black box that they could unplug and swap out so they could charge $800-$1000 in parts and labor then repair at the factory with three $10 relays. Anyway if you have any questions about this "un- recall" you may contact the Ford Customer Relationship (I'm in a "relationship?") Center at 1 (866) 436-7332 either they or the dealer can tell if your vehicle is covered if you have the VIN number handy. IN THE MEANTIME. Should you need to get granny to the hospital at night, you can try this AT YOUR OWN RISK. The LCM on my 2003 is located about 18" directly above the gas pedal under the back of the dash... Turn on the lights and give the LCM a tap with your foot. This will often engage the cheap Ford relays and the lights will come on. But you should make that appointment with the dealer before everybody starts fighting for access to the same part. I also don't know if Ford would be willing to call someone a liar if he claimed his headlights stopped working because he thought it is just a matter of time before the lousy relays in his LCM failed, since this is intermittent, and asked for an LCM replacement under this warranty as well. That is why this should be a RECALL, and not just some bean-counter's way of slithering out from all of the angry customers that demand action today. My Grand Marquis is really a fantastic car, but having to drive 50 miles home on narrow country roads with one terrified hand while holding the "flash to pass" arm with the other, and risking my life because Ford played it cheap with some relays on their flagship chassis for a decade or more, really makes you wonder what they were thinking.Remember: you have to take your car to a DEALERSHIP to get this fixed for free under warranty. DO NOT TAKE IT TO A PRIVATE REPAIR SHOP unless you just want to throw your money away!

The headlights don't work in my 2003 Mercury Marquis

First check the light bulbs if they are not the reason then, Welcome to the ford world, there is a thing called LCM (light control module in the grand marquis crown vics and lincoln town cars, sometime they go bad, your best bet before you look for replacing the LCM is to look for the headlight fuse and the relay, when you are sure it is not these two, then you can be sure its the LCM

How do you replace the Headlight control module on Mercury Grand Marquis

The lcm is mounted in the same location in all crown vics. It's under the dash, above the gas pedal in between the climate controls and steering column. If you're having trouble locating it, engage the hazard flashers and listen to where the source of the clicking sound is coming from. You can also place your keys in the ignition and open the drivers door and track down the module by listening to where the warning buzzer tone is coming from.
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Open hood. Disconnect battery ground cable .
  2. Locate lighting control module above accelerator pedal.
  3. Disconnect bottom two electrical connectors from lighting control module.
  4. Remove two screws retaining LCM to bracket and unclip from bracket.
  5. Remove lighting control module from bracket and disconnect remaining electrical connector.
  6. To install, reverse Removal procedure. Check lighting control module for proper operation.

Want to replace LCM 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

The Lighting Control Module can only be replaced by the dealer or by someone who has the factory scan tool. The new module has a blank memory in it. The tech needs to upload the memory from the old module, then donload it into the new module.
Sorry to burst your bubble.

Headlights come on for a 10 minutes and then turn off; dash lights, turn signal, passing signal all work etc.

There is actually a possible recall on this issue as it is a known problem with the LCM, or Lights Control Module. Go to the following site:
http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2003/mercury/grand_marquis/

This is one of the complaints:
HELLO, WE HAVE A 2003 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS THAT HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE HEAD LIGHTS SHUTTING OFF AT RANDOM TIMES. NOTHING GAVE WARING TO THIS PROBLEM HAPPENING, WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED, AND WAS JUST FINE FOR A YEAR, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN ONE DAY THE HEADLIGHTS JUST GO OUT. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO(3-1-10). NOW EVERYTIME IT IS DRIVEN WITH THE HEADLIGHTS ON, IT IS GUARANTEED TO HAPPEN AT LEAST ONCE AND SOMETIMES UP TO 5 TIMES JUST IN 3 MILES OF DRIVING ON MY WIFES WAY HOME FROM WORK. THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE LIGHTS BACK ON AFTER THEY GO OUT IS TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SHUT THE CAR OFF, LET SIT FOR A FEW MIN, THEN START AND THEY WORK AGAIN FOR A BIT. THIS IS OVERALL VERY DANGEROUS AND SUPRISING THAT WE HAVE NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OR RECIEVED A TICKET YET! I AM A ACTIVE MEMBER ON A CROWN VICTORIA FORUM, AND WITH LITTLE SEACHING ON THAT SITE OR GOOGLE YOU WILL SEE TONS OF REPORTS OF THIS BEING A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THE 2003-2005 CROWN VICTORIA, GRAND MARQUIS, AND MERCURY MARAUDER. WITH THE HELP OF OTHER MEBERS ON THAT FORUM IT WAS FOUND TO BE A FAULTY LCM(LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE) WHICH HAS A PROBLEM WITH OVERHEATING LIGHTING RELAYS. THE ONLY WAY TO REMEDY THIS PROBLEM IS TO PURCHAS A NEW LCM FOR ANYWHERE BETWEEN $250 AND $600 WITH NO GUARANTEE HOW LONG THAT PART WILL LAST. I ACTUALLY PURCHASED A NEW ONE TODAY. VERY EXPENSIVE FIX JUST FOR THE USE OF HEADLIGHTS, BUT I VALUE MY FAMILIES SAFETY MORE. I WILL BE KEEPING MY OLD LCM TO POSSIBLY HAVE IT REPAIRED FOR WHEN MY NEW PART FAILS AGAIN. THANKS SO MUCH.

HI,Inspect the #27 fuse holder of the Central Junction Box (CJB) for a questionable contact issue with the male spade of the fuse, which may cause intermittent loss of contact.if ok sounds like you need lcm= light control module.
