How do you remove the front drive shaft

Remove the axle nut from the spindle, remve the spindle from the strut to allow room to remove the axle from the spindle, tap the axle out of the spindle. Once loose put a pry bar between the transmission and the axle and pry the axle out of the transmission. Might be a little hard to pry out but it will pop right out. Then to put the new one it just put it in, line it up and tap it in, be sure to torque your axle nut to the correct specifications when tightening or you will have a bad wheel bearing in no time.

I have a poulan 500ex the rightrear axle came out of transmission i pushed it back in but it keeps coming out what do I need to do to make it stay in?

check that any cv joints are not seized up and if there is a slip joint in the axle check that it is not seized up as well. Check for a circlip on the end of the axle in the transmission end that is there to keep it in the transmission. If there is supposed to be one you will see a groove at the end of the axle.

The drive shaft has completly come apart. My husband put it back together temporarliy. Does this mean we need a new transmission?

If your transmission still functions fine-you should be good. The number one cause of worn front wheel drive axle wear is from worn transmission and motor mounts. As they wear they change the position of the axle, increasing wear. I would swap out the axle and have the mounts checked.

End of cv joint wil not come out of transmission

Use a large flat-blade screwdriver, and pry with it right where the axle meets the transmission. Lever it back and forth while you pull and shake the axle. There's a c-clip style snap ring on the axle inside the transmission, so you have to work it this way to get it to pop out. Keep at it, and pull/shake like crazy while you lever with the screwdriver, and it will come out.
