Question about 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
Engine light was and had trouble getting started. Once started code came up 430 so replaced catalytic converter. Next day engine light back on now 420 repair shop said oh other cat. converter and need distributor replaced. Left shop cause ummm don't have another $1000+ to give them. Engine light did go off but now back to engine turns over but won't start. Jump doesn't help. Battery tested and all good. Lights on dash dim when turning over but just won't start. Alternator or starter maybe?? Suggestions
Please that your Silverado to another shop. The Catalytic converter is warranty for up to 8 years at the GM Dealer and your Silverado is only 4 years so it should have been covered under the emission warranty.
P0430: Basically this means that the oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter on bank 2 is detecting that the converter is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.
You will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a rough/hard idle when cold.
A code P0430 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Next step is to measure the voltage at the oxygen sensor on Bank 2. In fact, it would be a good idea to test each oxygen O2 sensor while you're at it.
One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. GM give a 8 year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.
P0420 is the same as mentioned above but on the Bank1, it's very rare that both Catalytic converter goes bad at the same time.
As for not starting, check all your fuses and try this.
1. Rotate the key to the start position to attempt to start the vehicle (the vehicle will not start). Allow the key to return to the on position. (same as if the vehicle would have started)
2. The theft system light will flash (or stay lit) on the dash for approximately 10 minutes.
3. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns off) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt to start the vehicle.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes.
5. On the next cycle of turning the ignition key from off to crank the vehicle should start
6. Once the vehicle is running, the password is learned and this completes the cycle.
7. Clear any DTC's with a scan tool if necessary. DTC history will be cleared after 100 ignition cycles.
If there is an Auto Zone around your area, have them scan your Silverado for the DTC codes and post me back. Be glad to help you get your truck running 100% again soon without anyone trying to rip you off over a simple fix. PS: try cleaning your MAF sensor with MAF cleaner, you can pick it up at Auto Zone.

engine light comes on and off, these are indication that there is some
error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer
needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the
further problem can be detected and confirmed. The engine light
indicator blinks or remains steady on dash when engine computer
noticed any problem with any engine electrically operated components.

you know more about which areas to look, check, when there is engine light
coming up on dash panel.
