Question about 1998 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

My fuel was running on reserve i was going to put some more fuel in at the petrol station and the car cut out and stopped. A local garage towed it away and checked the fuel tank by removing the pump they found the was very little fuel. However when you tried to start the car there was no fuel getting to the engine. they carried out a diagnostics to check for electrical faults with the fuses this proved ok. the then suggested the fuel pump will need changing the crank sensor

You ended with the fuel pump will need changing the crank sensor???? what is this? it all sounds like the fuel pump is bad and needs changed. did this happen. there is a way to tell if this is what is wrong. you buy a can of starter fluid ( under $5 ) and spray it into the air box while someone is trying to start the engine. you open the air box and spray into the tube leading to the motor. if all else is ok the motor will fire and run as long as you keep spraying the starter fluid. when you stop the engine should stop. this is a good test for the fuel pump. what does the crank sensor have to do with it? Not to say the two could never quit at the same time but they are not related.
good luck and get back with me if i can help more.

My 1998 Lincoln Towncar stopped in the middle of the street it turns over but won't crank it has 3 dashes where it says fuel remain what is the problem?

Hi Eric:
Maybe it needs a dash more fuel.
Kidding, but maybe not.
If it was running fine and then just quit, the first suspect is no fuel.

Hope you got it off the street and into a safe place.

I'd start by putting some fuel in and giving it a try.

Then you get into trouble shooting, check for spark and fuel pump function, fuel delivery (injectors or carb)
Or a tow to the local garage.

My 1999 honda odyssey started then stopped , thought it was out of petrol , put petrol in , car turns over but wont fire , any help ,

If it did run out of fuel, and apparently that is possible if you immediatly put some in, you may have to cycle the key on and off to get the fuel up to the engine again. You should be able to hear the fuel pump cut in and run for about 3 seconds when you first turn the key to the "run" position, and then stop. You could remove the gas cap, and have someone put their ear to it while you turn the key. If you don't hear it run, it may be the fuel relay switch if you're lucky, or the fuel pump if you're not.

Is there an easy way to drain an X trail fuel tank

No easy way really, the best way is to get hold of an external electric petrol pump, put this inline before the diesel lift pump (With plunger on top in engine bay) and run a hose from this into a container, you then supply power to the pump and wait for it to drain, Make sure you tow the truck to a gas station and fill it completely with diesel to dilute any remaining residue of petrol to avoid engine damage and make sure you don't rev the vehicle as soon as you start it, leave it to idle for ten mins or so to avoid injector damage.

Car was starting perfect until wife tried to start when petrol tank empty have put petrol in car it runs appox 2-3 seconds then cuts out appears fuel being cut off

sounds like fuel pump is running but can not produce enough pressure. try pressurizing the tank with compressed air(may have an air lock) and if that doesnt work consult your local jag dealer for tips before you replace the fuel pump....

How can I drain the fuel tank of a 1998 RAV4? Someone put diesel in it!! Any other pointers to get it going? Thanks

you cant drain it as such as no plug, connect an old electric car pump to the supply pipe under the bonnet and draw it out that way ,this will remove 99% of fuel in the tank then put a couple of gallons of petrol in to start it,no problem this normally takes about 15 mins to empty tank ,cuppa and a *** time then to put petrol in and take to garage to refill with petrol, stop in cafe on way back for a bacon buttie and another cuppa ,then boss charges customer for removing the tank ,flushing and refilling, new fuel filter ,a bill with a meal.dont know how you got diesel in a petrol though as the nozzle wont go in the tank filler

many times it could be the gas. try getting Techron made by Chevron. its an additive used to make the gas burn more clean and keeps valves clean. also if you have a garage or frequently use one you might consider using Heat. frequently pulling a vehicle in and out of a garage can cause condensation in the gas tank creating a mixture of water in there. which will make the vehicle hesitate or run bad
