When filling the cooling system you need to fill it with the car running and the cap off. When the thermostat opens the water will circulate from the radiator to the block. This will allow you to fill it the rest of the way. the temp needle on that car is usually pretty close to the middle as a normal reading.

I`m positive you have a bad head gasket.I just did one for a friend of mine that had the same problem on his Buick Rondevous.Same motor. These are good motors but they have a tendency to blow the head gaskets. It is usually the back one for the #1 cylinder.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Why my engine over heats only when the a/c has been on for about 30 minutes. Turn the a/c off and the temperture returns to normal within minutes.

a/c systems generate heat around the radiator. But, the antifreeze in the radiator should be able to be cooled down by the fan even when the a/c is on.

I would flush and fill the radiator system installing 50/50 antifreeze/water solution.

How bad is the car overheating? Is it on a gauge that tells you how much it is over normal operating temperature?

Temperature gauge goes to hot and shortly later goes back to normal though car does not seem to run badly even while needle is at hot . reserve tank seems to draw antifreeze

you need a new thermostat, its sticking and causing you problems, soon it will just stay stuck, the reason the reserve keeps filling up is because of heat and pressure in the radiator

when the level of coolant drops in the motor the heater core is the first to be without
because it sets up high
so you need to check the level
and check where the coolant is going
to make the level drop
