Is there a bypass on the heater core

Hello bijtj.
There are no bypass hoses on the heater core. Flow of coolant out of the engine and into the core and back to the engine is flowing at all times. The heat inside your car is adjusted by means of a door inside the heater box.
If your intent is to bypass the core because it is leaking you would need to pull the hoses off at the firewall and install a joiner.

My heater doesn't work!

Check operation of the heater core coolant control valve and associated remote control mechanism.
Chech heater coolant hoses are not kinked or crushed,
Check that both inlet and return heater hose is equally warm, as this indicates coolant flow through the heater core.
If no coolant flow:-
Check cooling system is correctly filled, taking care to bleed off any air locks from the system as necessary (with heater coolant valve open);
Check heater core is not blocked- if blocked you may be able to backflush.

There is a coolant leak in my 97' oldsmobile achieva sl

If the coolant is leaking into the vehicle, I assume the passenger side, then more than likely it is the heater core. There are two possible fixes, the first, is to remove the dashboard, costly. Or, second bypass the heater core, the only problem with that is, you won't have any heat in the passenger compartment. So depending where you live that is a call of personal comfort. That should FixYa.
