Question about 2006 Jeep Commander
Sounds like it is in " Limp home " mode , this means that the computer has detected a fault and locked the trans in second in order to " limp home" . Our jeep did it because the injector seal was leaking ???? the computer called it an emission fault. ( very odd )
To fix, you will need to take your Jeep to the dealer and get it plugged into their computer, you should do this every 18 months anyway and get a diagnostic done . It may be something as simple as a software upgrade.
Good luck Marshall
