Question about 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

I am unable to get the caliper piston on my jetta to retract. i have read some where that i might need to turn the piston clockwise and compress with a c clamp at the same time does any one know if this is true?

Yes that is true but only on the rear caliper's, the front's just press in also with just the c clamp

I'm having trouble getting my caliper to compress. I have the fluid reservoir cover off. Should I still have to drain fluid? It seems like it just won't compress back in.


Try pushing in and rotating the piston clockwise at the same time. There should be slots or grooves on the face of the piston for this. You can use a C clamp and pliers if you are careful not to scratch the sides of the piston. You can buy or perhaps rent a special tool for this. Also, after the piston is retracted make sure the slot lines up with and engages the new pad properly.

How do you get the rear brake caliper piston to retract so you can change brake pads


It depends what type of Caliper Piston it is, if it has two grooves in it that criss cross like a X, those pistons have to be turned clockwise with a special tool or you can use a small screwdriver or I use the complete side of a small Vise grip that will fit inside the groove to turn the piston clockwise until it fully retracts into the caliper. The other type of Piston that has no special marks, you can use a C-Clamp and just put it on the Piston and tighten the clamp until the Piston fully retracts back into the caliper.

2006 Mustang rear break caliper piston will not compress/retract to allow new brake pads. I broke 2 c-clamps trying.


Hi Alberts73,
The caliper piston has to be turned clockwise as it is compressed. If not,it will not retract. This will allow the park brake to reset. If you have only pressed the caliper in with a "C" clamp,you may have damaged the mechanism inside the caliper. If this has happened,you will need to replace them.The OTC #206-026 is the tool for turning the caliper back into the bore. I hope this helps,if you need more information,drop me a line. How to close a piston/caliper on a 2006 vw jetta rear


The rear caliper pistons,turn as they go in,one side turns left,the other side turns right,after the piston is turned all the way in,align the notches in the piston to fit the brake pad.A square tool can be purchased at the parts store for very little money,that fits a 3/8 ratchet to do the job of turning the piston.

Reinstall rear brake caliper on 2007 Jetta


If you look at the piston on the Caliper it has 2 grooves on the face where the Brake pad mates to it. There is a special tool to push and turn the piston back into the caliper bore. that type caliper is also used to apply the parking brake. cable attached to rear of caliper and to an arm with a heavy spring. If you go to Harbor freight they have an inexpensive set for this.

Are any special tools required or any special process to change the rear brake pads on a 2006 Jetta? I have changed pads on BMW's Fords Chevys etc....but you never know, so I thought I'd ask. thanks!


These cars usually have disk brakes in the back. You need a caliper piston rotator tool, this tool fits into the caliper piston and you must turn it in to retract the piston, it fits onto a 3/8 " drive socket wrench. Npa sell a universal one for like $15.00 - $20.00.

yes, you need a piston retract tool for the rear cylinders. rear piston must turn clockwise as it is being retracting.

Unable to compress rear brake caliper is this caliper shot?


There is a tool that you can buy or rent at the parts house that you can connect to a hand tool EG: 3/8 rachet to use with a tool to compress the caliper while you turn the rachet. You will see some raised teeth on the calliper piston for the tool to bite on. Since the rear brake is used to lock the parking brake it has to have a self adjust to compensate for the brake pad wear. EG: Old school drum brakes adjust when you back up depressing the brakes and letting off while the vehicle is rolling allows for the adjuster to reset the brake shoe clearance.
