Question about 1998 Buick LeSabre

1 Answer

When I turn the ignition all lights come on, radio works, air and heat work, everything is like normal except nothing happens. No winding sound, no starter engaging nothing just a click and it only makes that noise once not a continuous clicking. It did this one time before about 5 days ago and when I came back to it after it sat for an hour or so it started right away and have had no problems until now. I am guessing the starter is going bad or maybe an electrical problem.

Check the connections at the battery they need to be tight and clean. the starter draws alot more amperage than any other electrical componets. if all connectios are good than it sounds like the starter is bad

so what you mean is it wont turn over? do the lights dim in the start mode of ignition switch? sounds like a few hard taps on the starter and maybe it will turn over,, might be you have a bad starter.

Sounds like the ignition switch to me. Unless you are really skilled, I wouldn't try that one. Take it to a good mechanic.

Nothing except lights working on bottom panel of my corsa so no power to air con, rear heated window or self circulation buttons also fan blower these are all on same panel below radio which works fine

The first question I would ask is what happened just before this? Anyone done any electrical work on the car that might have effected this? Apart from the obvious checking of fuses I would remove the lower panel and remove, check and place the wiring plugs back on. It sounds like a simple poor contact or burnt out fuse.

I was sitting at a stop light and the car died and smoke came from steering column ever thing else works light radio etc but when you turn the key there is nothing no idiot lights no miles nothing the car...

Maybe the ignition switch burned up. A lot of juice travels through them and it has happened.
What is confusing is, lights will work without the switch. You should be able to turn lights on without the key in the ignition. But a radio normally needs the ignition turned to ACC (accessory) or ON. And some when left on don't turn off with the key off until the door is opened.

Possibly the ignition melted and is affected to where the radio still gets power as if it was in the ACC position

The radio shuts off and all the warning lights are on

Bad ignition switch or an adjustment. Your talking, electrical switch here, not the key cylinder.
