No, it makes no sense. You have V-8, right? Removing the exhaust manifolds will not provide any help in accessing the starter. The starter is in the middle of the engine.

Intermittently having trouble starting when turning the key no response at all.

May be immobilizer circuit, or, on a 14-year-old car, it could be the starter.
When you get no response, have someone tap the starter with a stick. If that makes it work, it is shot.
I have heard that if you have a manual transmission, you can snake out the starter without removing the intake manifold. Not clear to me how that would help. On an automatic, you have to remove the intake manifold. PITA, but then you will know that you have a nice fresh intake manifold gasket.

How to replace a starter on a 1991 lexus ls 400

On Lexus ls 400 the starter is located underneath the manifold of intake. The intake manifold has to be removed to replace the starter. The intake manifold located on the top, left side of the engine from the front, along with the hoses, wires and tubes connected to the manifold.Mark each connections before disconnecting. This will help you while reconnecting. The starter is fitted by bolts.Remove the bolts and detach electrical cables on starter.Remove starter from engine compartment. Then re-fit the new starter in reverse as you removed the old starter. Its not very easy job.You will require proper tools to do this. This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

How do you replace the starter on a 2004 Honda Element

Removing the starter unit on a first or second generation element is the same process.
There is also another way to remove the starter unit without removing the intake manifold like many other people post out there.
I am a Honda certified technician and always find ways to speed up my flat rate time when working on various models.
The process I used was faster for me, this may not be helpful or easier for others, based on skill level but some people would rather just remove the intake manifold and access the starter right underneath.
Here is how I removed the starter on a 2004 Honda Element without removing the Intake Manifold.

I first removed the serpt belt and then un bolted the powersteering pump and set it aside. I did not have to disconnect any hoses at all.

Next step, I unplugged the knock sensor harness and set it a side.

Next, I used a 3/8 12in extention and a 14mm wobble socket and reached down to unbolt the starter's upper mounting bolt.

Next few steps are underneath the vehicle.

The next step for me was to remove the front lower splash guard.

Once removed, there was a bracket directly in front of the starter that I had to remove in order to ease the aid of removing the starter unit.

The next step for me was to remove the starter's lower mounting bolt.

At this point I was able to pull the starter away from the transmission and twist it around to access and remove the blade harness and 12mm power/charge harness.

installation is reverse of removal.

This process was eaiser for me since I had always removed the intake manifold on the Element, CR-V and 4cylndr Accords.

I was trying to think outside the box and this process worked out fine for my solution.

How to remove starter from 1997 toyota tacoma

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

On all engines except the 2UZ-FE, the starter is external, mounted in a conventional manner, alongside the engine block. One the 2UZ-FE, however, the starter is mounted in the 'V' of the engine, between the cylinder head banks. The entire intake manifold assembly must be removed to access the starter motor and solenoid. (Toyota calls the solenoid a "magnetic switch.")

Except 2UZ-FE Engine

Fig. Unfasten the starter mounting bolts . . .

6ecc4db.jpg

Fig. . . . then pull the starter toward the front of the vehicle to remove it (other components removed for clarity)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the nut and disconnect the battery cable from the magnetic switch on the starter motor.
  3. Detach the remaining electrical connections at the starter.
  4. Remove the nuts and/or bolts securing the starter to the bell housing, and then pull the starter toward the front of the vehicle to remove.

To install:
  1. Insert the starter into the bell housing being sure that the starter drive teeth are engaged with the flywheel teeth, NOT jammed against the flywheel.
  2. Tighten the attaching hardware to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and replace all electrical connections.

Fig. Exploded view of a common starter mounting found on Toyota trucks
  1. Connect the positive battery cable (starter wire) to the starter.
  2. Connect the negative battery cable.

2UZ-FE Engine

ae7791c.jpg

Fig. The starter motor on this 2UZ-FE engine is installed under the intake manifold between the cylinder heads, making it a lengthy procedure to perform
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the cosmetic/acoustic engine cover.
  3. Disconnect the accelerator cable and intake air connector.
  4. Remove the intake manifold assembly. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Engine Mechanical, Intake Manifold.
  5. Remove the two bolts holding the starter motor to the engine block and lift the starter away from the block.
  6. Detach the electrical connectors from the starter and remove the starter from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Make sure all electrical connections are tight and that the harness is secure.
  2. Install the starter and torque the two bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  3. Install the intake manifold.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope this help (ermember rated this).

1998 kia sephia starter

Its located just under the intake manifold. you will need to remove the exhaust pipe to access it. there is also an upper and lower intake manifold support bracket that will need to be removed as well to extract the starter.

Its in a tough spot.
