Check the fuse to the injector. If it is out or got wet, it could mimic these conditions. let me know what happens. I have an 85 model.

The engine control module (ECM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy, and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during Open and Closed Loop. During Open Loop, the ECM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without oxygen sensor (O2S) input. During Closed Loop, the O2S inputs are added and used by the ECM to calculate short and long term fuel trim (FT) fuel delivery adjustments. If the O2S indicates a lean condition, FT values will be above 0 percent. If the O2S indicate a rich condition, FT values will be below 0 percent. Short term FT values change rapidly in response to the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltage signals. Long term FT makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1. If the ECM detects an excessively lean condition, DTC P0171 or P0174 sets.
Diagnostic Aids
• Excessive resistance in the fuel injector ignition 1 voltage circuit or the fuel injector control circuit may cause the following symptoms:
- Lean condition
- Misfire
- Rough idle
• The system will go lean if an injector is not suppling enough fuel.
• A lean condition could be present during high fuel demand.
• A malfunctioning MAF sensor can cause this DTC to set. Refer to DTC P0101 .
• Review the Failure Records with a scan. If an intermittent condition is suspected, refer to Intermittent Conditions .

DTC Descriptors
This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTCs:
• DTC P0420 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 1
• DTC P0430 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 2

This code could mean the catalytic converter on that bank has failed .

DTC P0172: Fuel Trim System Rich !
The engine control module (ECM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy, and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during Open Loop and Closed Loop (CL). During Open Loop, the ECM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) input. During CL, the ECM adds HO2S inputs and level of purge to calculate the short and long term fuel trim (FT) adjustments. If the HO2S indicates a lean condition, the fuel trim values will be above 0 percent. If the HO2S indicates a rich condition, the FT values will be below 0 percent. The short term FT values change rapidly in response to the HO2S voltage signals. The long term FT makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1. A block of cells contain information arranged in combinations of engine RPM and engine load for a full range of vehicle operating conditions. The long term FT diagnostic is based on an average of cells currently being used. The ECM selects the cells based on the engine speed and load. The FT diagnostic will conduct a test to determine if a rich failure actually exists or if excessive vapor from the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister is causing a rich condition.
If the ECM detects an excessively rich condition, DTC P0172 sets
Circuit/System Testing For DTC P0172

Allow the engine to reach operating temperature. With the engine running, observe the Long Term FT parameter with a scan tool. The value should be more than approximately -20 percent with the engine running at operating temperature.

If the value is not more than -20 percent, inspect for the following:

With the engine idling and the transmission in the Park or Neutral position, observe the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor parameter. The MAP sensor parameter should be between 19-42 kPa.

If the MAP sensor parameter is not between 19-42 kPa, refer to DTC P0106 .

With the engine idling, observe the mass air flow (MAF) sensor parameter. The MAF sensor parameter should be within 2-6 g/s at idle.

What does fault code ECM - 250A long term - fuel trim:upper limit on 2004 volvo S40 mean


Sound like a problem with the MAF sensor, try replace.

Pulled codes for ECM-250A long term fuel trim upper limit, inspected and found air mass sensor failing internally, should show 4 f/s at idle and is showing 2.98 f/s at idle. Recommend replacing with new.

Hi, I have an 01' Volvo C70 2.4T w/P1171 code. At idle runs rough, but bring it to 2K RPM and it smooths out (in park). Checked for vacuum leaks and could not find any. Changed the MAF, made no...


indicates a problem injector
use a couple of cans of quality injector cleaner
the code refers to a problem in the fuel trim parameters
to put simply
the ECM is programmed to run with an average air fuel mixture
however there is a lower limit and an upper limit in that setting
Now the ECM does a tune up every 60 seconds so when it reads a consistent throttle setting and road speed it sets new limits for the mixture
this is evident by an increased economy on long drives and a reduction in economy in city driving
when those parameters are exceeded that is code p 1171
how to fix
possible causes are--
intake air leakage
exhaust system leakage
low/high fuel pressure
faulty heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
leaking injectors
faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor
sump oil level too high
What I would be looking at is the HO2S as it's primary function is to read the exhaust gas composition and report to the ECM which adjusts the mixture (fuel trim)
it is in the exhaust manifold/s before the cat converters
next check is the fuel pressures ( 45-65 psi) and faulty injectors ( injector cleaner )

DTC P2187: Fuel Trim System Lean at Idle

Fuel Trim Description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during Open and Closed Loop. During Open Loop, the ECM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) input. During Closed Loop, the HO2S inputs are added and used by the ECM to calculate short and long term fuel trim fuel delivery adjustments. If the HO2S indicate a lean condition, fuel trim values will be above 0%. If the Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) indicate a rich condition, fuel trim values will be below 0%. Short term fuel trim values change rapidly in response to the HO2S signals. Long term fuel trim makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7 : 1.

This code can only set when the engine control is in Closed Loop. The engine must be fully warmed up.

This must be diagnosed using a scan tool that can read engine data in order to determine the actual cause of the problem. It can be caused by the following things:

> Vacuum leaks
> Malfunctioning, dirty, or skewed Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)
> Malfunctioning or skewed Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP)
> Dirty or sticking injectors
> Malfunctioning or improperly programmed Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

I Have a 1171 code on a 1999 xc70 volvo and the engine runs real bad no power thanks


The control module receives information from the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) about the fuel/air mixture when idling at both the lower and upper part-load range - If the fuel/air mixture deviates from [lambda]=1 the short-term fuel trim will compensate for this by adjusting injection time so that [lambda]=1 is achieved. When the short-term fuel trim makes an adjustment, the integrator median must be adjusted by the long-term trim. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-261A will be stored when the long-term trim must be adjusted to maximum in the lower part of the load area.

It measures the oxygen in the exhaust system, for instance, if the fuel is to rich it sends values to the computer and the computer will adjust the fuel and timing to bring it back into perimeters
