Question about 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible

1 Answer

My Beetle doesn't take the speed it used to. I have to push all the gas pedal to go up a hill. When I am driving, the car starts shaking. The Engine Light turned on, but I still don't know what it is. Can you help me?

Well the first thing you should have done is take your car to your mechanic that you trust with your vehicle. When the engine light is turned on it really could be anything cause lots of things in the car can set off the light. I would take it in. Also I would check all of your car fluids and see if it needs a tune-up. Check your transmission too. Hope this helps!!

Please rate solution - Thanks.

What causes shaking while accelerating

Mrs Amanda when you said on pushing the gas pedal is shaking do you mean the whilst accelerating with engine running ( reving) you do receive a shake? or when pushing the pedal you do feel on the pedal with engine off a shake? If it is the first check for any spark plug or spark plug HT Lead not working and cause the engine to shake. If is the second cause then check for your pedal connection cable etc.

99 frontier feels like the engine is holding back when going up hill

Sounds like your catalytic converter may be clogged.Have the exhuast pressure tested and look at the cat after a hard pull uphill and see if its turning redish or changing color.

My 1967 VW Beetle loses power real bad going up hill why

Almost all 1967 VW beetles came with a 4 speed manual transmission. A few had a "semi-automatic" transmission which was basically a VW manual transmission with an electrically actuated clutch and a torque converter. For the semi-auto, there was no clutch pedal. Instead there was an electrical connector at the bottom of the stick shift. When the driver touched the shift and started to move it to shift gears, the contact would be made and the clutch engaged. This would confuse people if they were used to driving with their hand on the stick shift.

1. If the engine is racing when you go up the hill, then the clutch may be slipping. If you have the semi-auto, then the torque converter may be bad.

2. If the engine is not racing and you're just losing power, then there may not be enough gas getting to the engine. Check the fuel pump output as another answer suggests. The carb's float and needle valve may not be opening all the way, thereby not allowing enough fuel into the carb. Or, you may have a partially blocked main jet in the carb which is not letting enough fuel to flow into the engine.

I had a similar problem, when i would press the gas pedal down X%, the car would shake, and kinda do a "Pop pop pop pop pop" noise.. (NOT a backfire, like a light popping noise), ended up being a tiny air leak in a hose.. Fixed that.. 6 mo. later, a gasket in the throttle body had sprung a leak (Leak of air pressure), and the car is doing this again.. feels like its gonna stall, and does it when i accelerate fast, or go over 60.. This is all because jaguar uses digital gas pedals (VS "Drive by wire"). if this is it, its a easy, cheap fix.
Just start the car, and put your ear towards the engine (With the hood up.. watching out for moving parts), listen for a hissing noise.. Your car should not hiss at all.

My engine runs like the timing is off when I rev it or push down on the gas pedal. 3.5L V6. The engine runs smooth when the rpm's are low, in town driving. When rpm's go high, like climbing a hill, the...

This could be a TPC valve or sensor. That is a throtel position control. Your engine will idle or run at low speed fine or in stop and go traffic but highway driving or climbing a hill when the demand changes to heavy or light consumption it will surge the engine as it can't get a good read on what it is suppose to do. This is a resonable priced part and for about twenty bucks for a CHILTON manuel for your car it will give you step by step instructions on this and almost any project you want to try yourself. They will have these at your autoparts store.
