Question about 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Pull out the rubber boot that holds the wire bundle between the driver side door and the body. Look for any wires (usually a ground wire) that are disconnected from eachother, and re-connect them. I used a portable solder gun, or you can make an extension of the wires and use a **** splice. No matter how, those wires need to be connected. most likely this caused by the wrong length being installed or just excessive force opening the door causing the wires to seperate. I had the same electrical issues (gauges goin crazy, and the windows and locks not working) happen to my jeep 02 grand cherokee, my problems started after 130k on the engine, normal from what i read eventhough this is a huge problem. I work in avionics so the electrical system seemed like a good place to start looking.

Hard to guess, but the best idea I can come up with is that the regulator in the alternator malfunctioned, and you were getting wide variations in voltage throughout the whole system.
Once reset, if it seems to be normal, I would not worry.
If you want to check, get a voltmeter and check alternator output.
