Can't find thermostat on my 01 golf

Depends on the engine, but it is generally located behind the 2 bolt flanged fitting that bolts to the block, where the top radiator hose leads to.
With respect to the car, if tends to be in the front (side) of the engine, under the intake and exhaust manifolds. Not easily found, and access may be better from the bottom of the car.
Let me know what engine, and I can describe it better.
