The Ford F-150 4.6L have three VIN engines, so for this type engines you have this firing order...

1997 Ford F 150 Pickup 4.6 liter CNG SOHC V-8 VIN "9"
and
1997 Ford F 150 Pickup 4.6 liter V-8 VIN "6"
and
1997 Ford F 150 Pickup 4.6 liter SOHC V-8 VIN "W"

Can someone supply me with - bac74ad.gif

A scanner is indicating a misfire on cyl. #7. So I take it from the picture that #7 is on the left side(drivers) side. This is a dohc. Is this correct?

Going to start with engine basics, do a compression check to see if
cylinders are with in 10% of each other. Vaccuum leaks can cause idle
roughness, check hoses especially hose elbows to PCV valve. Spray intake
joints with choke cleaner and listen for idle speed variations.

Also, you can try switching the coil packs around to see if the misfire
follows the move. For example, if the truck recently had a misfire on cyl 7 (had
the shaky idle/acceleration and flashing CEL). You thought it was a plug
or a wire, and put a new one of each on as a test and it still had that
dead miss on #7. You need moved the coil pack, and sure enough the misfire
moved. Replaced the coil, and she runs like a top again. Only a $55
part, so it wasn't tough on the pocket book either.

    Good luck.

Firing diagram

If you expect to get useful help, you need to supply all the pertinent info. What year is your Ford Ranger? What size engine does it have? Best way to determine the engine is to reply with the 8th digit of your truck's VIN code. This is because some vehicles have two or three variants of the same size engine. Please reply with this info so I can give you the firing order.
