SOURCE: need to know how to

Hello.
this is a moderately challenging job but as long as you are handy and have access to the necessary tools it is very doable. If you do not have all of the recommended tools call around to the local auto parts stores as some of them actually loan out tools at no charge. Here is an excellent article showing the step-by-step for a chevy

Change timing chain on a 1999 Chevy Cavalier thank the chain jump time how can I get it back on time

I am assuming that you have the 2.2L OHV engine (most do). If you have a timing chain problem, you may want to think about this....this engine is prone to timing chain tensioner breakage. This causes the timing chain to jump out of time. This will often cause the pistons to slam into the valves in the aluminum head, causing valve damage. If you decide to replace the timing set, insure that you get the chain, both gears, and a new tensioner. Install them and set the timing back to correct specs. THEN, perform a compression check of all cylinders BEFORE attempting to start the car. If there is uneven compression, you will need to pull the cylinder head and have it repaired or replaced before you can operate the vehicle. This is a tricky job. Aluminum heads are easy to warp and/or crack. You will need to replace all the cylinder head bolts when you replace the head as they are special bolts that are designed for one-time use as they have a stretch factor built into them. Remember to use thread sealant on those head bolts that extend into the water jacket or you will have coolant leakage. And most, important, USE A TORQUE WRENCH that is in good working order when tightening the head bolts. Be SURE to follow the correct pattern and torque settings or you will have problems.

I have been advsed that I have a broken timing belt or "jumped timing chain.Besides the belt/chain, what other components do you recommend replacing(Gasket/seal,cam and crank pulleys, tensioners)?

I am assuming you have the 2.2L 4 cylinder engine. The timing chain tensioner on these engines is nororious for failure resulting in jumped timing. Be advised that depending upon the situation, you may have sustained major engine damage. If the timing simply jumped when turning the engine off, you may be safe, but if it occurred at highway speed, there is a high probability that there is valve damage in the engine that will need repair before you can move on to the timing chain and tensioner. As far as "other components", if your know that the head is ok, then you should replace the timing gears, chain, and tensioner. Also purchase a "timing gasket set" which will give you the gaskets ans seals you need to do the job.

I need to know how to replace timing chain on olds 3.5 twin cam motor.

Take every thing off the front of engine, until you have access to the timing chain cover . This is a very large task. If you are not a mechanic be careful you have to make sure #1 cylinder is top dead center before removing gears and chain.

I have a 1987 Dodge Ram 50 sport 2.6 litre the head gasket is blown how do i get the timing chain off to replace the gasket

You have to remove the oil pan - harmonic balancer - timing cover to replace timing chain... to replace cylinder head gasket and not the chain -- you need an assistant to hold the camshaft gear with chain on it. Suspending it with wire to keep the chain from moving the timing (do not let the chain relax as it will come off the crankshaft gear and change the timing)

I changed my timing chain and gears and i cant get my timing set for nothing can you tell me why or point me in the right direction

Verify that the distributor rotor is pointing directly at the #1 cylinder spark plug wire tower on the distributor cap, with engine set to TDC on the compression stroke for the #1 cylinder.
If not, and you have not touched the distributor previously, you have not set up the valve timing properly. Recheck your timing gear and chain alignment marks.
Hope any of this helps you. Good Luck!
If you need a diagram of the timing chain and gears, email me a request at partyguard@gmail.com
