Question about Cars & Trucks
I have an 02 Ford Fiesta. When I depress the clutch I hear a loud rattling sound which vanishes when the clutch is let out. Could the problem be worn release bearings and if so will I have to replace the entire clutch or is it feasible to simple replace the worn parts?

Your throw-out bearing is about to go. Very soon, it will take out the rest of the clutch, and you won't be able to put it in gear. The entire clutch should be replaced for this, as it's going to be well worn, likely has little life left, and you will have to split the engine and transmission for this anyways. The clutch kit comes with a throw-out bearing, and most of the time, you can't get the bearing seperate. Be cautious in driving it, once it goes quiet, that means that the bearing has seized, and your time is out. Often people think that the problem has solved itsself when this happens, and are surprised shortly afterwards when their clutch pedal goes to the floor without resistance.

Unfortunately, you can't really tell until you have the parts in front of you. If the clutch showed no signs of slipping in any gear, then the disk and pressure plate are probably ok. Throwout bearing troubles are usually heard as a sort of screech when the pedal is depressed. If the pressure plate is the type that has 3 fingers that are pushed by the bearing and one of the fingers was bent/broken, it would make a rattling sound. If the car has considerable miles, it might be worthwhile to replace the whole assembly even though the clutch itself seems to working well. Hope this helps!
