SOURCE: point setting on 77 ford

On your 77 there are no points, it is electronic ignition. that is why there is no gap or dwell. the only adjustment you have is the timing. which is 12 degrees before top dead center or (tdc)

SOURCE: timing advance and dwell specs ford probe

timing and dwell angle is non adjustable in these later model vehicles. the dwell is simply a reading that might be useful on a scope, while the timing advance is controlled by the systems ecu(computer) by taking readings off the knock sensor(or pre detonation sensor). this is a mazda engine. is there a problem or are you simply trying to keep up on the maintenance?

What is the dwell angle on a 3f engine if point gap is 18 thou

dwell angle is the no of degrees rotation between points closed and points open and for example on a 4 cylinder engine ( 4 lobes =90 degrees the dwell would be around 45 degrees available
there is an adverse relationship between point gap and dwell angle
the closer the points the bigger the dwell and conversely the bigger the gap the smaller the dwell angle
in a distributor the point gap of 18 would have a large dwell angle and that affects ignition timing
in your workshop manual there will be a dwell angle specification and if you set the points at .020 " that will put you close to the dwell angle specification
from there you adjust the gap to obtain the dwell setting
after yo have the dwell set , adjust the ignition timing
there is plenty of information on dwell angle, /point gap if you type in ---dwell angle to point gap relationship--

What is the points setting for a 1967 Cadillac Coupe De Ville

The ignition points in GM Delco distributors are adjustable while the vehicle is running. Although I have not found any specific point gap stated for your 429 ci engine, the instructions say to turn the adjusting screw clockwise until the engine starts to misfire, then back out a half turn (footnote 5). The most accurate way to set the point gap is to use a dwell meter to set the dwell angle at 30. I recall mine was fairly inexpensive (about 35 years ago), but I don't know if they are even available these days.

What is the dwell on a 1956 235 6 cylinder

the dwell angle and the point gap are closely related and seldom alter unless the point cam is worn or the point rubbing block is worn To go back to 1956 I will have to open some old manuals to get the dwell so if you make a comment I will see what I can get for you. As you can appreciate the dwell angle is the degrees turned that allows maximum saturation of the coil to produce the hottest spark and that is why I mentioned that the point gap is critical to get the correct dwell.

1969 jeep with inline 4 cylinder changed points started nice 2 days later turns over im getting spark n fuel but not starting

Did you check the dwell angle after you installed the points? You need to remember that dwell (point gap) effects timing, but timing doesn't effect dwell. You should also replace your condenser and make sure to clean (wire brush) where it mounts to the dist.

Dwell angle

200 cid 6 cylinder: dwell 35 to 38 degrees, point gap .024 - .026, initial timing: 6 btdc for manual, 12 btdc for automatic. You'll need a semi-decent dwell/tach - something in the 25 to 30 buck range should do nicely. Good luck.

I need the timming specs in my 1966 buick riviera its got a 425 nailhead single 4.

The spark plug type is 44S and the gap is .032. The ignition points should be set at a 30 degree dwell angle or a .016 point gap. The ignition timing should be set at 2-1/2 to 3 degrees before top dead center, and the engine compression should be 170 psi. Let me know if you require a firing order diagram or any further assistance.

Settings for points for 454 engine86 chev c30 scotsdale one ton truck

You have a 1986 454 engine with an old style breaker point ignition distributor, GM has not used a breaker point ignition for their V-8 engines since 1974, is that an older distributor or something after-market?

The ignition points dwell angle for that engine should be set at 29-31 degrees dwell (a dwell meter would be the most accurate way to set the ignition points), or a .019 in. point gap.

The spark plug gap for that engine would be .035 in. and the timing should be set at 10 degrees before top dead center.
