SOURCE: Service engine light is on and diagnostic code is

The P0141 indicates a problem with the oxygen sensor heatercircuit for bank 1 sensor 2; that would be the post cat sensor. Testing for power to the heater at the sensor plug would be a good idea, but the usual cause for this code is a faulty heater inside the sensor itself. Since this is a post cat oxygen sensor, that should not cause the problems you are describing; the post cat sensors are there to monitor catalyst efficiency.

A very low or zero front O2 sensor voltage cvan be caused by a fault in the front O2 sensor signal circuit, but is more commonly caused by a very lean condition; lean fuel mixture = low (near zero) voltage with no crosscounts.

So, I would suggest starting diagnosis by checking for anything that can cause a very lean condition. First step, would be to take a fuel pressure measurement. If fuel delivery is not correct, the engine will run very lean, hesitate, and be low on power above idle.

The next thing (after fuel delivery is verified and determined to not be causing the problem) would be to check for a faulty mass airflow sensor. If the MAF sensor signal is skewed low due to a contaminated sensor or an air leak in between the MAF and the engine, it will cause the computer to underestimate the amount of air entering the engine and it will respond by shortening injector pulsewidth to inject less fuel resulting in a very lean condition.

Hope this help (remember rated and comment this help) good luck.

1996 GRAND CHEROKEE CODE #P0141 AND P0138

Hi there:
Both codes refer at O2 sensor...

DTC P0141 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
This code means that the heated circuit in the oxygen sensor on bank 1 decreases time needed to enter closed loop. As the O2 heater reaches operating temperature, the oxygen sensor responds by switching according to oxygen content of the exhaust surrounding it. The ECM tracks how long it takes for the oxygen sensor to begin switching. It the ECM determines (based on coolant temp) that too much time elapsed before the oxygen sensor began operating properly, it will set P0141. See also: P0135 (Bank 1, Sensor 1).

You will likely notice poor fuel economy the illumination of the Check Engine Light.

A code P0141 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
open or short to ground in the wiring harness
O2 heater circuit wiring high resistance
O2 heater element resistance is high
Internal short or open in the heater element
Note: Typically a failed catalytic converter does not cause this code. You're more likely to see a P0420 code for a failed converter.

Possible Solutions:
Replace oxygen sensor (cannot repair open or short that occurs internally to sensor)
Repair short or open or high resistance in wiring harness or harness connectors

DTC P0138 - O2 Oxygen Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank1, Sensor2)
The Heated Oxygen Sensor (2) located rear of catalytic converter produces an output signal relative to oxygen storage capacity of catalytic converter. Ho2S 2 signal is less active than signal produced by front oxygen sensor. This code sets when HO2 Sensor voltage is greater than 999 mV for more than 2 minutes (time depends on model. Could be as high as 4 minutes)

There may be no noticeable symptoms except for MIL illumination. Possible high fuel pressure can over rich the system.

A code P0138 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty O2 sensor
Short to battery voltage in O2 sensor signal circuit
High fuel pressure (not as likely)

Here are some potential solutions:
Replace O2 sensor
Repair short to battery voltage in o2 sensor signal circuit.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

I have Nissan Altima 2001 running 93500 K. since last a week service engine soon light on and showing P0141 & 0325 codes. What is the fix for P0141 and P0325 error codes.

p0325 = bank 1 sensor 2 oxygen sensor p0141 = knock sensor
if it were me you could watch the sensor on a scanner to see if working properly but without a scanner i'd replace the oxygen sensor bank 1 = passenger side
sensor 2 is sensor behind the catalictic converter screwed in

good luck

What is diagnostic procedures for DTC p0135 & p0141

Oxygen Sensor problems... P0135 (Bank 1, Sensor 1) and P0141 (Bank 1, Sensor 2)

P0135 - Oxygen O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1)
This code refers to the front oxygen sensor on Bank 1. The heated circuit in the oxygen sensor decreases time needed to enter closed loop. As the O2 heater reaches operating temperature, the oxygen sensor responds by switching according to oxygen content of the exhaust surrounding it.

The ECM tracks how long it takes for the oxygen sensor to begin switching. It the ECM determines (based on coolant temp) that too much time elapsed before the oxygen sensor began operating properly, it will set P0135.

Symptoms: You will likely notice poor fuel economy the illumination of the MIL.

Causes: A code P0135 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
O2 Heater element resistance is high
Internal short or open in the heater element
O2 heater circuit wiring high resistance
open or short to ground in the wiring harness

Possible Solutions:
Repair short or open or high resistance in wiring harness or harness connectors
Replace oxygen sensor (cannot repair open or short that occurs internally to sensor)

P0141 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
This code means that the heated circuit in the oxygen sensor on bank 1 decreases time needed to enter closed loop. As the O2 heater reaches operating temperature, the oxygen sensor responds by switching according to oxygen content of the exhaust surrounding it. The ECM tracks how long it takes for the oxygen sensor to begin switching. It the ECM determines (based on coolant temp) that too much time elapsed before the oxygen sensor began operating properly, it will set P0141.

O2 heater circuit wiring high resistance
O2 heater element resistance is high
Internal short or open in the heater element

Note: Typically a failed catalytic converter does not cause this code. You're more likely to see a P0420 code for a failed converter.
