Hi Steve, I'm glad to help. First, take of the front wheel's. Then press the calipers inward, this will make it easier to remove the calipers. Next, remove the calipers with the old pads. PUSH the calipers all the way back and install the new pads. There are only 2 bolts holding a single caliper. NEXT, If you plan to replace the rotors. NOTE: Which I recommend. You'll need to remove the bracket that holds the caliper, there is only 2 bolts holding it to the spindle. NEXT, Remove the rotor and relace with new rotors. Note: sometimes the original rotors are stuck because of rust you'll need to tab them off with a hammer. After installing the new rotors, it helps to put one nut on to hold the rotor in-place. Then re-install the bracket, the caliper and thighten the bolts. CAUTION: DO NOT try to drive the vehicle until pumping the brakes and they are very firm. Install the wheels and your good to go. you must remove the brake caliper and the brakes next the bracket that was holding the caliper must be removed there are two big bolts holding it on once that is removed use a hammer and tap the rotor off when you replace the rotor use never seize and the two big bolts shood be lock tight you can pick up never seize and lock tight ( blue) hope this helps good luck
Cable and linkages are likely seizedwith rust and/or ice. Remove bottom caliper bolt to remove caliper up and off rotor.Un-bolt caliper support to allow removal of rotor. Make sure parking brake eyelet protruding throuth backing plate isin the off position that is pointing to rear ofcar; secure with vice grips if necessary.Now proceed to tap rear face of rotor all arround on inside to remove Depending how badly it is corroded and internally seized,(also worn groove) ,rotor and internalparking brake shoes will have to be sacrifiiced and replaced. Purchase new hold - kit emergency brake shoes and rotors for both rear wheels
first take off wheels, then check if it is a star screw or a normal bolt, then remove the bottom bolt, remove the top bolt, and take the caliper off to access the pads and to remove the rotors, then back together the way it came apart with some anti seize on the face and bolts. Sometimes you have to pound the old rotors off...
There are two different types of calipers used on 01 Beetles.
The first which does not have a detachable caliper bracket is easiest and is as follows:
Remove front wheels
Unbolt calipers from integrated spindle/bracket with proper allen bit and lift calipers and pads and support them.
Remove set screw holding rotor to hub. You may need an impact screwdriver as these seize up with age.
Slide rotor off hub.
The second has a separate detachable bracket that wraps around the rotor.
Remove the front wheels
Remove two caliper bracket bolts holding bracket, caliper and pads onto rotor as a unit.
Some vehicles have a standard bolt in this position, some have a VW special star bolt, so inspect to see if you are equipped to remove these. If you have the star bolts and do not have the proper tool, you need to get it... attempting to use the wrong tool will not end well.
Use a philips screwdriver to remove the set screw holding the rotor to the hub. You may need an impact screwdriver as these screws seize up with age.
Slide rotor off the hub.
1. remove 2 bolts holding caliper on (either 12 or 14 mm) 2 remove 2 bolts holding caliper bracket (which holds the brake pads) (17mm) 3. remove the 2 phillips head bolt holding the rotor on 4 remove rotor, if rusted may need to tap it off 5 reverse procedure, when reinstalling caliper, may need to press piston back into caliper to get it to fit over new rotor
Remove tire. Remove caliper and caliper holder. Remove rotor. Using a 36 MM socket remove center nut and slide hub off spindle. If hub does not come off freely use wheel puller to remove hub.Loosen front wheel lug nuts. Jack up and support front of truck with jack stands ( put them in the middle so both you can get to both sides of the truck). Remove tire, Remove caliper and caliper holder. romove rotor ( I had to use a 2x4 wedged between rotor and lower controll arm rubber stoper. then started truck and turned the wheel right or left to pop rotor free). remove 3 bolts that hold hub to knuckle. on the next step I used a steel pipe about 1 1/2 foot i think about 2 inches in diamater. wedge it between lower controll arm rubber stoper. then start truck turn the wheel left or right to let power steering pump do the work. It poped it off easy for me both sides in less than 1 hour. put alot of anti seize on the new hubs and bolts in case you have to replace them again. use a torque wrench to tighten all bolts. Great time to replace brakes as long as you are in the area. hope this helps.
take off tires. two 14mm bolts behind the caliper. loosen the bottom 1. tilt the caliper up. slide caliper inward of the car, let caliper hang. two 17mm bolts behind the bracket take it off. and rotors should slide out. if rotor seized spray WD40 and hammer the rotor. careful don't hammer the stud it will screw up the thread.
You can try a couple of things. First the most common is try spraying it with something like WD40 or get a breaker bar which will give you more power to turn it and will add alot more tension so the bolt will break loose. Could be that the heat seized it there but try these steps.
