Question about 1995 Dodge Neon

1 Answer

95 Neon jerks in low rpm acceleration. + loss of torque

95 Neon
Car jerks when heavily depressing the accelerator while under 2000 RPM. If I push it too much in the low rpm, I hear a clunk noise coming from the clutch/transmission area (which im attributing to a worn clutch). the issue is almost non existent when the car is cold. when cold, the car wil rev from 1000 to 4000 nice and clean. but when warmed up, i hear the engine sputtering between about 1000 and 2200 (which can also be heared when double clutching). i recently topped up the water in the battery (but over filled it, so some bubbled out), and cleaned up the leads connected to the battery. I seem to have lost all torque when accelerating even over 2000 RPM

Your idea of a clutch problem is correct. you will need to replace the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and have the flywheel turned or replaced on car. Sorry to tell you this but it will have to be done to correct your problem. shop around to find a good quality clutch repair kit with all the parts that you will need. and remember in shopping that all companys have different warrantys on there products. hope this will help you.

i know i need to get my clutch resurfaced (i was originally just thinking replacement, so thank you for that advice!), but the issue im describing is apparent even when the clutch isnt engaged.
its a completely sepparate issue from my clutch.

even if im idling in neutral, and rev it from a low RPM the engine shudders/jerks, until it gets above 2000 rpm at which point it runs smoothly...
    any thoughts?

There are several different things that could cause the jerking problem with the car. The coil and spark plug wires could be breaking down. Get yourself an inline spark plug tester to check each plug wire from coil while car is running to find out if you are getting constant fire to plugs. also look at the vacuum hoses for any holes/cut/ or just worn out. replace the hoses you find that are no good. Check the spark plugs to see if you have 1 or more plugs fouling out on car when car has wormed up. Check the air filter for any restriction/dirt/oil/etc. The fuel pump/fuel filter could cause the problem as well. A leaking egr valve also could cause the problem. A leaking fuel injector will also cause a car to stumble. the coolant temperature sending unit will also cause the car to stumble under a load. It sends a message to the pcm telling it how cool the engine is running, if its not working correctly then the pcm will make the car run either rich or lean causeing the same problem. There are so many different things that would cause your problem. You might take the car to an auto-zone parts store and let them run a scan on the pcm for you. they do not charge you anything for it, and it will give you a code to what it might be the problem. Let me know what you found out. i hope this will help you.

At a stop car jerks forward with brakes applied

Are the engine rpms climbing when its jerking forward? seems like it could be a Transmission torque converter problem.

My daughter has a 2000 neon and when she pushes the gas peddle the car is not accelerating. Also the engine light comes on sometimes and then goes out..

check your throttle cable and if your unsure of where to loate it have someone press and depress the accelerator and you will see it move while looking under your hood make sure its secured in correctly and if it is follow the cable all the way back to the accelerator to make sure its not broken and its hooled up securly to the accelerator.

You have a bad (clogged) fuel filter. Have it replaced, they're cheap, you should be fine after that.

I would look for a fault in the ignition system such as a cracked spark plug. Might need a scope check to put your finger on the problem
