Question about 1996 Dodge Dakota
I have a 96 dodge v6 fuel injected 3.9L dakota, been running great till today, went to start it up and it just died and wont start, so I checked the spark (good) new coil. wires new (good) spark plugs good and rotor cap good. so I started checking fuel flow I have about 47-50 psi I as I crank , so fuel pump is good... so I look at my fuel gage and it's at half a tank, so I think mabe fuel float bad, so I grab 5 gallonsput it in and crank for abit and it starts, drove around and added more fuel, ran great till I shut it off, then it wont start again, so i troubleshoot some more, and start think i got bad fuel, so I hook up a hose to the fuel rail and let it flow a few times and then crank it and it starts perfect, disconect hose and test drove, runs great, but soon as i shut it off it won't start again unless I hook up the hose and drain fuel.
I would suspect you have a bad check valve in the fuel pump, allowing the fuel to return to the tank, causing excessive cranking time. You will need to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and watch to see if the fuel pressure starts to drop off after the engine has been shut off. It should hold pressure after the engine is turned off, so you have fuel available for an immediate start. After it's shut off and won't start, is there fuel at the pressure test connector?
