You might have a sticking shift solenoid. You could try changing the fluid and transmission filter. Note the color and smell of the transmission and if anything is in the pan.

Have you checked for auto transmission fluid level? It needs to be Mopar ATF +4 ONLY, no other brand will work correctly. Check for major leaks. Check tranny for tranny codes NOT cel codes.

Check the sensors on the transmission. May just be corrosion on the sensors or it may be a faulty sensor. Also, the torque converter bearing may have went bad due to the running it on low transmission fluid.

A 1955 Ford would have a Ford-o-matic transmission which has three speeds forward. The transmission starts out in second gear unless you shift into low.
I am not aware of these transmissions having a neutral safety switch.
The 3 speed automatic transmissions that started in low and had a downshift to second under load were first used in the mid 1960s.

Renault 21 transmission shifting

hi Hamish, what you describe is called a 'flaring shift' when revs
don't correlate to vehicle speed due to a slipping auto.
have you rechecked the auto oil level when the engine is running,
sometimes they take a long time to fill because the onboard oil
pump in the auto in very small.

Transmission will only go in reverse

Thats never a good sign. I'm assuming its an auto trans. You put it in gear, engine just revs as you give it gas? Try putting it all the way into low, sometimes you can get them to go by shifting them manually, starting in low. Otherwise, find you a good transmission guy you can trust and have them rebuild it. They will be able to build it stronger than stock.

Engine speed hunts on idle. Auto trans slow shift.

The fast idle valve is inside the throttle body. Sometimes it backs out and needs turned back in (it's threaded). This will cause the loping idle.

Get transmission filter changed with new fluid. Honda does not recommend transmission flushing.

1998 chevy k1500 4x4 4 speed auto.transmission wont shift out of 2nd gear. shifts fine from 1st to 2nd first and reverse is fine wont shift out of first, shift servos have been replaced.

Had a similar problem with same model pickup but would shift into third only after reaching high RPM in second @5000. There was TSB that came out about this a few years ago. I had to replace the valve body in the transmission to fix the problem and worked perfectly after that. Hope this helps!
