By putting it in neutral, you run the risk of burning up the clutches and totally destorying the transmission. The reason it resets, the trans is controlled a computer. When you turn off the key, it resets the computer. The problem is with the control solenoids in the transmission. It needs to be taken to a reputable transmission shop(one who will also offer a good warranty). Most transmission techs have seen this issue multiple times.

There isn't a seperate computer for the transmission. It may be an electrical problem. I would have the vehicle connected to an OBD II scan tool and check for any codes, pertaining to the transmission. It maybe a shift soelnoid.

It sounds like a valve in the valve body that is sticking, try lube guard,in the red bottle at your local napa auto parts,it is real good, naw,it is great,it will treat the metal in the valve body, and it is a synthetic additive.

This additive is about 11.00 dollars not to bad to fix the vehicle.

When the engine is turned off, there is no hydraulics, the valve can return back to normal, with no pressure on it,but if you do not want to try this, have the codes read on the computer to see what actually is the problem,or have a transmission shop hook up to it and see what they come up with,it can be anything, but thought you might want to try this first, and if it works, you are out 11 dollars and some tax, anything else will be a lot more, and it could be something else,

The infamous Exploder transmission. Try a tranny flush and new gasket. More likely it needs a new transmission.

Is the van in neutral or park? How about the battery cable, did you put it back on? Is it clean? How about the battery terminals,? Clean? Anti-theft device? Just because your starter is new , doesn't mean it is good. If you can't get it to turn over the motor, take it back. Hope this helps.

Most likely the second gear section of the transmission has gone bad. There are 3 or 4 different gear sections or assemblies in an automatic transmission, when they go bad, they go bad.

2001 Dodge grand caravan sport. Transmission slipping/ jerking. Seems to run only in second gear... still slips and jerks. Smells of burnt trans fluid and the level is low on the dipstick.

I need a little mor info. But the reason for the being stuck in 2nd gear is because when something goes wrong with the tranny. it goes into "LIMP" mode wich keeps the trans. from shifting out of 2nd when you are going forward. It does sound like your trans. is gone out though.

Tranmission problem on 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

When the trans. sticks itself in 2nd gear and stays there is because it's detecting a trans. problem and puts itself in "limp in" mode. When it happens again, to somewhere to have a scan done on the trans. so you can find out which sensor on the trans. is acting up.
