Question about 1995 Cadillac DeVille

The information center reads "very low freon" and "ac compressor off". this happens whenever you press the auto button on the climate control panel. On the climat control panel when you press the AUTO button, AUTO flashes once, then switches to ECON. The fan comes on but the COMPRESSOR does not.

You'll need to have the A/C system serviced. It is low on freon so the compressor isn't coming on, and you won't have any A/C. Usually you'll just need some freon.

I have a 98 Buick Lesabre Limited. It blows Cool air, but not Cold.And also, I can't seem to make it blow out of the Center Dash Vents.


Cornelius, vent problem could be a pinched or loose vacuum line on controller,faulty AC vacuum motor, faulty AC programmer,etc. needs to be checked out by a good Tech, diagnosed and estimate on repair.
As far as vehicle only blowing cool air, issue could be blend door issue, plugged AC condenser core dirt/debris, low AC refrigerant, plugged AC lines internal, failing compressor, etc., again should be checked out, diagnosed and estimate for repair by a good Tech.

I have driven 80K miles so far in 12 years. All of a sudden AC stopped producing cold air. All vents when turned ON only blow heat (HOT-AIR only). AUTO switch only lights up when temperature is increased...


The temp is controlled by a flap called an air door. It could be an electric motor/actuator, a vacuum control or a manual cable but the door is likely not closing all the way and allowing air to pass through the heater core. ----------
There are few possibilities needs to be checked.------ The Freon, is the Freon low.Get the AC pressure tested.The low pressure switch towards the Accumulator, should show 35 to 45 lbs and high pressure switch should show Approx 80 to 100 lbs,------- But if freon level is fine then get the Hvac module inspected.Its module problem , This is the module in the dash board that has all of the A/C control knobs and buttons in it. It is very easy to remove; only 4 screws have to come out first.This module fails or shorts and cause this problem.------ But first check the freon level, if its low then its low freon problem.Get the pressure tested, if no pressure showing then by pass low pressure switch via jumper and see if compressor runs.If yes then replace the low pressure switch.But if all checked ok, then its HVAC module.--------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

You need to check the freon level and if that is good check the compressor. If you have no pressure on the low side, when I say pressure on low side I mean vacuum, then most likely the compressor is bad or you have a leak someplace. You can get a freon fill kit at Walmart, Target, Auto Zone and most any auto parts stores. These kits comes with a gauge and connection hose. Typically if the freon is low the compressor won't activate. Connect the fill hose to the low Side of your AC and turn the AC on to Maximum with the engine running. If its a low freon problem the compressor will start to kick in as the pressure increases. Make sure you don't overfill the system as this will cause a seal or line to blow. Being a 1998 your vehicle should use R134A freon which is what can legally be purchased by a home mechanic. It cost about $12 to $20 a can and usually includes a leak detector additive and seal conditioner.

Get an r134a refrigerant add kit from Walmart or your local auto parts store.

You can even get a can of Arctic Freeze by Intermatics that has a hose and a gauge on it.

Connect the hose to the low side port. You can find this port on the 'thicker' piping that comes off of the compressor (versus the thinner piping that comes off the compressor which is the high pressure side).

Pressure should read 25 psi to 45 psi on the low pressure side when the compressor is running and the a/c is on.

Pressure should read 75 psi to 100 psi on a hot day when the car is off.

However, you'll want the a/c to be running when you add freon.

Press the button on the can to install more freon, if needed.

Air conditioner compressor runs - freon is up to proper level....not cooling??


BOTH High and low readings should be checked to have a better idea of what is going on with an AC system but based on the limited information… the compressor is not engaged or is not pumping. Below are some things I would check;

1. Check the high and low gauge readings with the AC on & set on MAX/Recirculate, middle vents with the engine at 2,000 RPM’s, blower speed on high.

2. Check the vent temperatures with a thermometer from the middle vents, far right & far left vents?

3. What is the outside temperature at the time the readings were taken?
4. Check to see if the condenser fan blowing strong?

5. Notice if compressor clutch is cylcling excessively.
Could be overcharged, not enough air going across condenser fins, compressor not pumping sufficiently… BOTH gauge readings are really needed to get a better idea.
Below are normal car AC pressure readings with 134A.

Normal readings on high and low side with AC OFF (static pressure) – Depends on outside temperature, but normally is between 80-105 PSI

Normal low side reading with AC on high speed and MAX & engine at 800-1000 RPM’s – Ranges from 25-35 PSI

Normal high side reading ranges from 200-350 PSI

Don’t assume that if adding little Freon is good that adding a lot is better! Overcharging just a little can decrease the performance of the system and possibly damage the compressor

On that model,it will cycle on and off while you add freon.If it does not ,then the ac system might have a problem.The low side pressure switch is located on,or near the accumulator .Unplug the switch and take the wire end plug and connect the two plug in`s together(cross it out on the wire).This will make the ac compressor engage and you can charge the system,do not leave the wire connected,plug it back up to switch.If the ac compressor does not come on ,then have the system checked out.

A/C turns off during operation


I encountered a similar problem not long ago, though it was a freon issue and discovered that it was something totally different when the low port reading was 125psi. Confused at the reading, and inexperienced with AC systems I sought secondary opinions, and disovered a solution to my particular issue. The compressor clutch was not engaging due to a faulty relay, thus the system was not cooling--hence the buildup of pressure on the low port line. Truthfully, there could be a number of things causing your AC to act up, here are some of the things to check first & foremost:

1. AC Compressor Control Relay (defined as "M/G CLT" or Magnetic Clutch Relay) may be failing. This can be located in the electrical box to the right of the battery under the hood.

Turn the car on, set the AC to MAX and let it run for a while. While facing the front of the car, look under the hood on the left side of the engine. Straight down in front you will see the AC Compressor. There is a belt spinning a pulley, and a clutch assembly within that pulley which engages the compressor. Use a flashlight to see if the clutch is engaging. If you find that it cycles on and off, then you could possibly be a bit low on freon..

If you've checked the freon and it's within range, then try swapping the "FOG" relay with the "M/G CLT" relay (DO NOT DO THIS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING). After the swap, start the vehicle and set the AC on MAX. Inspect the compressor again to see if the clutch is engaged. If your clutch was not engaging on your prior freon psi check, then check it again while the clutch is engaged and the system is cooling--this will give you the proper reading for your freon levels. If this solves your problem, DO NOT leave the FOG relay in place of the M/G CLT relay. Go to an auto parts store and purchase a new relay--OEM costs about $70.00, standard replacements (which I happen to have part numbers for.. AdvanceAuto: #R6034, or #35874. NAPA: #TEM207703, or ECHAR6034. AutoZone: #MT0610. O'Reilly Auto: #35874) run anywhere from $14.00 to $30.00 depending on where you go, and what quality/warranty you desire.

2. AC Compressor -or- comp clutch may be failing. If the air comes on and cools intermittently and the relay is functioning, then it may be a problem with a slipping belt. Check your tensioner on your serpentine, as well as the belt. Make sure there are no cracks in the belt and that it is tight along its route.

If neither the relay nor the belt are the cause of your problem, then you may possibly want to have your system purged, flushed/cleaned, and recharged... this is the more expensive part of maintaining an AC system.

AC Wont charge after replacing components


whenever the ac system has been opened it should be hooked up to a vacuum pump designed to evacuate the ac system of any foreign debris and oil etc and after should be able to hold a vacuum to show that there are in fact no leaks then if all is ok at this point you can then charge your ac with the proper freon specified for you car when the pressure reaches satisfactory level the ac compressor will then cycle on you should not bypass the low pressure switch
