Hi, I'm suspecting a problem in the secondary ignition system. Can you list how many miles are on this vehicle? Was there any recent maintenance done and if so what was replaced ( spark plugs, ignition wires?) Thanks in advance.

It has about 150,000 km on it. (By the way it is a 1981, not 1982). It is a chore truck and doesn't get used very much. I have only changed the alternator and regulator recently. Can't remember last time I changed plugs, wires etc. Probably more than 5 yrs ago. It rarely gets any maintnence at all. As long as it runs for 15 or 20 minutes at a time, that's all we use it for. Would like to get it fixed up now though. Hope this helps. Thanks.

Ok, the way to approach this issue is with starting with the basics. Spark plug inspection will tell you how the engine is running. Spark plug wires need to be inspected for cracks also. Ignition coil wire and the coil itself could also be suspect and if there is rusting on the coil, it will leak voltage when hot. I would recommend re-creating this no start condition when hot ( I am assuming Hot is normal temp), then check to see if you have spark at the plugs during this hot stage. I understand this vehicle is used for limited travel, but it may be time to replace these parts which is routine.

Before purchasing anything, perform the visual inspection and let me know what you have found.

    Thanks.

Possibly an ignition module or crank sensor problem. These are the two most common stalling electronics that will cause a stall when they get warm/hot and will then continue to operate once cooled down

You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.

Check the electronics in the distributor. Chevs are notorious for the electronics going bad inside of the distributor.

Check the prrimary and secondary resistance on your coil. Also check the resistance of the plug wires and plug gap.

2003 Cuts off when hot, will not start untill cool

My 2003 nissan sentra would get hot and stall out even in middle of highway doing 70 mph. The guages would go up and down. Would not start up all the time after stalling. had to cool down first. Nissan said it was head gasket, and wanted to charge 1000.00 for the job. I took to local dealer who charged me 550.00. Works fine ever since. Nissan dealer said they do like 3 head gaskets a week on the sentras. They have crappy ones in original parts. They have not recalled though.
