did u check the brake light switch? does it have 12 volts in and out when the brake pedal is depressed> if the switch is not working the transmission will not come out of park, it is a safety feature mandated by the Federal transportation safety board, so please check the switch and get back to me, a cheap $5 12 volt test light (avail from any auto parts store) works well to do this test.

What fuse on 1998 Lincoln Towncar controls breaks and gear

Since you only mentioned drive, I'm going to presume you meant you can't shift into any gear, Is this correct? Normally, I would say this isn't an electrical issue, it's mechanical, either something in the shift column or the shift linkage is broken or come loose so I browsed the fuses in my owner's manual and you can check these fuses: fuse #8 (10A) - Shift Lock, Speed Control, fuse #14 (7.5A) - Transmission Control Switch, fuse #10 (20A) - Brake Pedal Position, Brake Pressure Switch. If you can't shift out of Park, turn key just enough to unlock steering wheel (not turn on dash lights) and see if shift lever moves. If so, then shift into Neutral and start car.

My brake light are not coming on when i press the brakes and my gear shirf is not releasing either. i change the brake switch but the are still not coming on

Did you check the fuse for the stop lamps? If not, the fuse you want to check is located in the fuse panel located inside the vehicle to the left of the steering wheel by the brake pedal. Below i gave you a picture of the layout of the fuse and the one you want to check is the fuse in the number 33 position. If you are in a bind and need to move the vehicle you can bypass the brakeshift interlock (which is preventing you from changing gears because the brake lights are not working) by doing the following procedure: Apply the parking brake and then turn the key to the "LOCK" position. Remove the key. Now put the key back in and turn it to the "OFF" position. Now push on the brake pedal and you should be able to shift the gear selector into the neutral position . you can start the vehicle and shift gears from the neutral position and be able to move the vehicle. I hope this helps you and good luck.

My 1996 Toyota Camry will not shift out of park at times. Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem before I have to take it to a mechanic? Thanks Joe

There are few things that has to be checked 1)Transmission Lockout switch on the brake pedal 2) If transmission lockout switch checked out OK , then the solenoid on the gear lever that is activated by that switch has to be checked. 3)Step on the brake pedal and see if the brake lights come on. If they don't, check the brake light fuse to see if it is blown.
If the brake lights come on, then turn the key to where the steering wheel unlocks, but no lights come on. Set the park brake and see if the shifter will shift into neutral.
If the shifter moves out of park, then you will need to check the shift interlock actuator as its not getting power when the brake pedal is depressed.
Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

I have a 1994 F-350 Crew Cab Dually. Fuse #13 keeps blowing out and the shift lever locks and won't allow me to put the truck in gear to move it. I was told that a swith on the brake pedal could be at...

i would try looking at the wires to the trailer hitch under the rear of the box where the whip that runs to the front which has a plug on it,connects to where it branches off to go to each tail light, somewhere there is a short blowing the brake light fuse. When that happens you wouldnt be able to shift it unless you turn the key on until it unlocks the steering, then shift it to neutral, then start it then it would go into gear to drive it but you still wouldnt have brake lights.

My 2001 crown vic will not shift out of park

when you depres the brake pedal do yoiu hear a clicking noise in the steering column? (this noise would be a sign of the shift interlock solenoid functioning)? are all of the brake light bulbs working? (it wont let you shift without all brake bulbs working)....you can overide this shift feature by turning key to on position, without starting vehicle, shift into neutral, then into your desired gear. i hope this helpos your some! good luck!

ABS light, gear won't change

Sounds like he may have blown the brake light fuse while messing with the bulb. Make sure the correct bulb is installed. It should be a double filament bulb not a single. The wrong bulb will blow the fuse.
The shift lock solenoid uses the brake light switch to unlock.
The ABS code will be for the brake light system and will clear itself when the power is restored to the brake light switch.

2000 daewoo won't shift from park and no brake lights

Sounds like the park/brake shift interlock switch is bad.

Or

"An actuator solenoid and module assembly, located on the lower portion of the steering column, locks the shifter in Park whenever it receives a signal that the ignition switch is in the ON position. When the module receives a signal from the Brake On-Off (BOO) switch that indicates the brake pedal is depressed, it unlocks the shifter so that it can be shifted out of Park."

It says the most common failures in the system are the fuse and the BOO switch, and if they are fine, special tools are needed to diagnose.

To disable the system: Apply the parking brake, turn the ignition key to LOCK, then remove the key. Insert the key and turn it to OFF. Press the brake pedal. Shift to neutral, start the vehicle and select the desired gear.

Will not shift out of park

Chances are you're parked on a hill. You need someone to push on the car to take the pressure off the parking pin in the transmission. The other possible problem is there is a solenoid the won't release the gear shifter until the brake pedal is depressed. If you are pushing the brake pedal before trying the gear shift there is a malfunction in this system. This is not as easy to fix. If you aren't mechanically inclined I recomend taking that to a mechanic. If you are so inclined let me know and I can help guide you thru the steps.
