Does a 1996 ford explorer 4.0 eddie baurer have a lock out torque converter

do you mean a Lock-up torque converter ? if so yes ford made electrically lockable torque converters since 94 ( all torque converters are hydraulic activated ,lock-up is proformed using a electric solenoid ) , but only certain transmissions made by ford had them , decode your vin number on left corner of dash to determine if you have E4od transmission or 4a400 model these have solenoid
I ask this because to my knowledge only race cars use a LOck out converter (aka "transbrake") for very high hp startss

Where is the clutch solenoid on montecarlos 2000

This code refers to the electrical side of the torque converter not the inside workings of the converter itself. Check the electrical connector and harness for opens breaks or chaffing. Most of the times the tcc solenoid replacement will fix this issue.

What do a PO742 code mean?

Yes in most cases the torque converter is defective, you will need to have the transmission removed to replace the torque converter.

Dashboard message - service engine soon ?? my local service station said it said - torque converter

That is located in the transmission and can be very expensive to repair/replace - Do NOT take to Amco! Did he also tell you the exact electronic code? Uusally, the code will say more than just torque converter.

Have you noticed any hesitation when you are starting to move; in reverse on on a hill - any noticeable slipping?

MY 2003 ACURA SE LIGHT CAME ON MY NEIGHBOR HAD A TESTER IT SHOWED P0740 TCC MALFUNCTION WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Torque Converter Clutch. It has to do with the transmission. It could be a small issue such as a trans. fluid and filter change. Or could be the solenoid failing. At worst, the torque converter is shot...transmission failure.

What are common symptoms of torque converter failure, and can a failing torque converter damage the transmission? Any answers are appreciated!

common torque converter failure symptoms are: higher than normal rpms at highway speed, rpm jumping in city traffic (press accelerator and rpms spike before you really start moving), lack of pick up, sometimes a loud roaring sound depending on type of converter. as far as damaging the transmission goes... not really, if the torque converter froze up completely then yes but that is extremely rare. the converter is probably worn out which is generally just letting the crankshaft slip before the transmission can get the power
