Question about 1994 Toyota 4Runner
If you enjoy toying with the possible repairs of a computerized engines electronic emmisions and controllers systems then perhaps you should invest in a hand scanner, try a cheaper one for starters, approx $79.00-$100.00 to see if this works for you, for if you venture in the more expensive scanners $125.00-$300.00 you cannot return these items and you are "stuck" with something you may never venture into use again should you find yourself not wanting to pursue this as a hobbie, etc.
Can you disclose what code or codes you have been able to discover, to further enhance your knowledge in finding the correct circuit to try and repair, also what year make and engine are you dealing with as well as the model of the vehicle, once that is established you can further study the problems the engine is encountering in hopes to find a cure.

The check engine light comes when the computer control unit (called the PCM) senses a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system, there are about 200 possible faults that turn the light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores do this testing for free.
