Question about 1987 Ford F 250

Why does my 1987 ford f250 sputter when going up

Why does my 1987 ford f250 sputter (loses power) when going up hills?

It has a 7.5 L V8 VBBL Engine (Carb of course) and I can smell gas after the unit sits overnight.

On the flat it does great... not problems at all.

Only 64,000 miles.

When u are going up a hill this puts a load on the ignition system, this causes any marginal spark plug wires to short to the engine and cause a missfire, this is most likely what is wrong with the truck

With my 2004 Ford 6.0 liter when pulling a hill with a load it seems like the turbo boost is not as strong after pulling for a while and the power is less. If I pull over and let it sit idling for a few it...

sound like engine getting hot when you pull a heavy load going up hills. when putting load on a engine it will over heat and will lose power because it inhales less air by volume.make sure your air filter is not clogged.a diesel engine needs a good air flow or breathe the air filter need to clean.also a restricted exhaust.if you have a restricted air filter and exhaust system the turbo not going to work good.also check coolant fan clutch.if you turn it by hand and it free wheel fan clutch needs to be replaced.if cooling fan clutch has resistance then its good.a bad coolant fan clutch will cause engine to over heat.

Does temp gauge go up when this happens ? When was fuel filter changed last? If not recently, I'd start there.

Check engine light is frequently a loose fuel cap, but the other problem could be a bad fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter. Try the fuel filter first - its the cheapest.
