Question about 2004 Kia Rio

3 Answers

2004 Kia Rio - sputters and hesitates when going up hills. Automatic transmission but I have to shift into low gear to start up a hill. Once I shift into second gear, the engine hesitates and begins sputtering at times, but sometimes climbs a hill with no problem. Very erratic. Changed fuel filter and it doesn't help. Check engine light is on. Is there a sensor that could be causing this problem?

IT COULD BE DIRTY CLOGGED FUEL INJECTORS OR BAD SPARK PLUGS + WIRES STOPPED UP AIR FILTER. BUT HAVE CAR SCANNED IT COULD BE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR OR VOLUME AIR FLOW SENSOR.COULD BE MANY THINGS.

It could be a number of things, but the check light means you have at least one stored fault code, and that'll help you narrow down the issue. Click my screenname, go to my tips and tricks, and read the one about saving an hour's labor charge. It'll guide you.

My car has trouble shifting uphill and in low gears

When a car is going uphill, it has to use more power to get up the hill. Most automatic transmission cars will automatically detect this, and shift into a lower gear to get the car up the hill easier. As you get to the top or let off the gas, the car should than shift into a higher gear to maximize fuel efficiency. What does your transmission seem to do? Not want to go into a lower gear, are the RPMs jumping up and down before it shifts?
