The odometer in this car is a true LED (light emitting diodes), they are a known problem and I see many posts on the problem, I own this same car and dread this will happen to my car, the fix is this, you must remove the speedometer from the car and send it out to have the gear position display replaced, the local dealer can do this or u can do it yourself, here is one such company on the internet that does this repair, the cost is about $200 USD, the company will provide detailed instructions on removal of the cluster on request.

Its possible that you have bad harnesses connections in there, or bad soldiers in the electronic board; first step check all the fuses, next, take off the instrument cluster to check; read this procedure for 1997-00 Buick...

CAUTION All models covered by this guide are be equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SIR components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SIR, as described in this section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disarm the SIR system, as outlined in this section.
  2. Remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate using the following procedure:
    1. Remove the instrument panel access hole covers from the instrument panel using a small flat-bladed tool.
    2. Remove the screws from each end of the instrument panel cluster trim plate.
    3. Remove the screw(s) from the lower edge of the right side of the trim plate.
    4. Open the instrument panel compartment (glove box) door.
    5. Pull the right lower trim panel plate from the instrument panel.
    6. Pull the steering column tilt lever and tilt the steering column to its lowest position.
    7. Grasp the instrument panel cluster trim plate at the right edge and slowly pull, working to the left to release the retainer clips. Remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate from the vehicle.

  1. Remove the push-pin retainers from the top of the cluster.
  2. Rotate the instrument cluster rearward and disengage the locating pins on the bottom of the cluster from the instrument panel. Detach the electrical connectors and remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle.
  3. Installation is the reverse of the removal process. Use care to make sure all installation clips are properly located. Do not over-tighten any screws or they could force their way through their holes and the panel will not be held properly. Squeaks and rattles may develop later.

For the SHIFT GEAR INDICATOR check the bulb behind the indicator, its an LED display and a part of the instrument/speedometer cluster. You can remove it, ship it, and have it repaired for $100-$200.

Hope this help.

1999 buick century odometer light does not work

this is a common problem and the dash cluster must be removed and sent out for repair, cost is about $175 to replace the LED (Light emitting diode) display that has burned out, this is a faxtory defect as far as this expert is concerned, it is not a fuse problem.

The dash lights for odometer and gear indicator is out on my 1998 Buick Century. All other dash lights are okay. Is it a fuse? Where are the fuses?

maybe but sounds like a couple of lights have burned out,. the owners manual should tell you where the fuse box is located. The dash light for the odometer/gear indicator may be accessible from under the dash, get an auto maintance repair manual from the local auto parts store , perfably a chiltons for about 20.00. It will help u loctae the dash lights and the fuse box more readily.
