Question about 1988 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

1 Answer

My 1988 ¾ ton Silverado Chevy truck was running fine when I stopped at the post office. When I came out it would not start. This truck usually starts with just the turn of the key (don?t have to give it gas or anything). The engine turned over and tried to start a few times. I let it sit for a half hour or so waiting for a friend to give me a tow. I tried to start it when he arrived and the engine turned over fast (to an old guy like me ? it seems like it was flooded) but did not try to start. I took the air cleaner off to look in the carb but this truck has some type of fuel injection ? two electrical operated units in the housing. There was a smell of gas but not overpowering. Where should I start trouble shooting with this problem?

Turning fast generally points to a failed timing chain. Check engine compression and that distributor turns without stuttering while it's cranking.
If that checks out, and there is no spark, check the ignition module and wiring on the pickup coil under the plate in the distributor. There is no valid test on module...If everything appears normal, just replace it.

Common problem on the 03-06 Silverado instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Check out this blog post about the problem - Silverado fuel gauge problems

i had the same problem, and it turned out the coil pack was moulding inside wich stopped the spark all together, i ended up changing my coil pack and putting on new wires because the ends connected to the coil were very corroded and that cures the not running part just fine
