Question about BMW 335

1 Answer

I have an intermittent starting problem with my BMW 530 diesel year 2000, it starts for 5 or so starts and fails to fire next time even with engine cranking at good speed, either engine hot or cold. When left for five minutes or so starts on first attempt. A new battery,a new camshaft sensor and a new fuel forwarding pump -underneath passenger seat- have been fitted . This seems to be a type fault on this model, as posted on the internet ,but nobody gives the defining answer. Nothing shows up on diagnostics as when the car gets to the garage the problem has self righted

If problem is an intermittent type fault why does it start perfectly on all the other occasions.can't see how recalibration is going to fix this.??

I SEEM TO HAVE WASTED MY MONEY WITH THIS SITE,THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY A FAULTY SPEED SENSOR,CAN YOU PAY ME FOR THIS ADVISE???

  • Tom Dolan Mar 10, 2013

the fault was in a starting relay, the mechanic drove the car for a few days and when the car wouldn't start he connected the diagnostic box and found the fault..That's how to fix an intermittent fault.Tom Dolan BE,IMEE

Hi! You may need to have your engine calibrated. Once done, I believe you'll be good. Its like you done everything but missed something. Hope this helps and good luck!

Thats the tricky part when it comes to diesel powered engine. They may run good today and tomorrow may not. I suggest that you have your PCM (powertrain control module) checked too, when its faulty it trips sometimes. We may be dealing with a faulty PCM too.

Hyundai Verna late starting and engine gets switched off when cold.

Hello Rajiv Chaudhary,

First and always... on diesel engines YOU want to check your injectors... (Bosch CRDi... see video at bottom).

It is certainly an experiment... but the down-side is you end up with new ones in place and a GOOD SET of used SPARES (only if I am WRONG).

FAILING THAT SOLUTION (Only)...

Failing that significantly changing your situation...
Once fire & fuel have been completely covered... and because of
60 years of mechanical experience I then move on to EXHAUST PROBLEMS... (even before suggesting code readers).

Your engine must properly breath to start quickly & run properly.

I know of no elegant way to check... just open the exhaust
and see if it improves your starting... Get out the penetrating oil and GET TO IT....

Failing that... hire a professional
(get a bucket of money & surrender it to a mechanic...
(but I hope my advise averts that)).

We do not have BMW diesels (thank goodness) in the USA. That said has the engine control moule been scanned for fault codes? You must do this 1st.

Due to part availability, this recall is being conducted in three phases. Phase 1 will consist of 1998-1999 vehicles, phase 2 will consist of 2000 vehicles; and phase 3 will consist of 2001 vehicles. When sufficient parts are available to notify customers of 2000 and 2001 vehicles, you will be notified and will receive a new initiation report.
Recall - Ignition Circuit DefectCondition
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1998 model year Buick Skylark; 1998-2001 model year Chevrolet Cavalier; 1998 model year Oldsmobile Achieva; 1998 model year Pontiac Grand Am; and 1998-2001 model year Pontiac Sunfire vehicles. If the engine fails to start and the driver holds the key in the "start" position for an extended period, high current flows through the ignition switch, and sometimes produces enough heat to melt internal switch parts. If the switch is damaged, a fire could occur in the steering column, even with the engine off and the key removed. The fire could spread to the interior of the car, which could injure occupants of the car or cause damage to adjoining structures.

I have changed rail pressure switch on bmw 530 diesel but when car is cold start if engine is hot the car not start until i spray easy start into it

Hi we have a similar fault on a 2002 X5 diesel with 140k.km
scan test on 'Autologic' says > low fuel pressure in rail under starting< we have done leak off test at diesel specialist and they say it needs #4 and #2 injector renewing, the low pressure from tank is at spec at approx.3.4bar whereas the rail press at crank is only between 102bar to 140bar on 6 diff scans, where i believe it should be at around 390bar, hope this helps, we still have not fixed this yet,
