I was always taught that black smoke is unburnt fuel exiting the exhaust and white or bluish smoke is oil blow by engine wear or damage.

May simply be a clogged air filter. check your service records to see when it was last replaced, get it checked.

Engine running rich, try cleaning your MAF sensor and inspecting your vacuum line to your fuel pressure regulator and or replacing your fuel pressure regulator.

Misfiring cylinder 3 & 4

Sounds like a bad turbo to me. When you "kick it in", the engine falters and you get black smoke for a while. What is probably happening is that the turbo is leaking oil into the intake air stream, putting it into the cylinders with the fuel/air mix and causing one of two issues. Either the oil is inhibiting the combustion process, causing the falter and the resulting poor ignition, plus the oil, is giving black smoke, OR, the oil in the cylinders is fouling the plug momentarily, resulting in the fuel/oil being passed into the exhaust stream, burned in the catalytic converter and exits as black smoke. If it runs OK except when under turbo load, have that thing checked out ASAP. And, as far as the light staying on, most faults will set permanently after they occur three or more times within a certain period of time. This is ti ensure that intermittent faults won't cause false setting of the light.

Why is my 2001 jeep grand cherokee blowing smoke everytime i am stopped at the red light .

If the smoke is black , the mixture is too rich. If it's white and disappears soon after accelerating, then it's valve stem seals.

Black smoke when accelerating, engine light blinks

Black smoke is excessive gas, too much going through the engine, so not all is burned. The engine light on should set trouble codes. Have the computer scanned for codes-it should lead you to the problem.

My 1998 Rav4 gives off a few seconds of black smoke at engine start. No other problems have presented. Anyone tell me what is going on? Thanks in advance!

You may have an excessive rich mixture due to a sensor malfunction that is causing excessive fuel enrichment., The part that gets me is that you don't have a check engine light on. a 98 Rav4 is an OBD2 vehicle and should have thrown a code and turned on the check engine light ,if you have a bad sensor Black smoke is usually a sign of too much fuel, blue smoke is a sign of oil being burned and white smoke or steam is usually a coolant leak into the combustion portion of the engine, Verify the color of smoke and go from there. Some enrichment at start up is normal because cold engines need enrichment to start and run properly till warmed up.. Goodluck

Black smoke is unburned gas. If the car is running fine besides the black smoke, it's most likely the Coolant Temperature Sensor. The part is roughly $20 and an easy fix.

PS- I'm guessing your check engine light is on...

Black smoke

Sounds like a bad o2 sensor is causing the problem. Most auto parts stores will scan your car for free to tell you what o2 sensor is bad.

There is also a possibility that there is a leak in the turbo tubing. check all of the hoses and plastic pipes for leaks.

hope this helps.

Your engine is toast. The black smoke indicates more than likely your valve seals are leaking oil into the combustion chamber or the piston rings are shot.
