Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier
If when you took the lead off the plug the tapping stopped then it must be a small end(big ends knock)lack of compression would stop sudden downward pressure on bearing hence no tap.
As you are using oil it would be more cost effective to rebuild the whole engine,it would mean that you only take the thing out once......
