Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

My ol ladys car a 96 cavalier always burnt about a.25 to a1/2 quart of oil a week. it never leaked at all .well recently im thinkin it might be about to throw a rod. it taps real bad ,lost some power, but dont smoke, so i started it and pulled a plug wire off one by one. when i got to the third plug it quited down alot. has she bent a rod? is it a quick fix? what would be the best solution?

If when you took the lead off the plug the tapping stopped then it must be a small end(big ends knock)lack of compression would stop sudden downward pressure on bearing hence no tap.
As you are using oil it would be more cost effective to rebuild the whole engine,it would mean that you only take the thing out once......

Burning 2 quarts of oil a week but theres no smoke. All the gadskets are good and theres no sign of leaking I need to know how to keep oil in the car

2 quarts in a week is a lot. Check your positive crankcase ventilation PCV pipe (and valve if you have one). If the pipe is clogged or the valve is stuck shut then this could cause pressure to build in the crankcase and force oil vapor past the piston rings to be burnt. The amount is so fine per stroke you would hardly see it in the exhaust plume, this is not like worn valve guides where drips of oil cause great clouds of blue smoke. If the PCV is OK you need to have your engine dry and wet pressure tested to determine if you have worn rings

I have a 96 Chevy Cav. Looks like I have a fairly significant oil leak on the front side of the engine (belt side). It's losing approximately 1/2 quart of oil every 250-300 miles or so. It looks like it's...

Sounds like the front seal is out. You may have to take the engine out of the car to fix it. It requires removing the harmonic balancer to get to the seal.

Car is burning oil

you have sort of an swered your own question, its burning it slowly, it could be the piston rings have warn and the oil is seeping past them under presure and being burnt in the fuel, not not noticably enough to signs of smoke from rear , try checking the muffler/rear box and see if there is a sticky oily residue on it, for normal running it should be verry dark grey not pitch black and powdery, if its tacky and like tar, then you are burning oil. hope that helps

Why would my 96 honda civic be burning oil

Is it burning it or leaking it? If it is burning it then it could be caused from worn out valve seals or valve guides or worn out or cracked piston rings. The engine will have to be torn down to fix a problem like this. You may try using a product like motor honey or lucal oil stabalizer to help slow down the oil burning. There is no easy fix for a problem like this unfortunately
