I would recommend checking the ground wire to your battery. Mine comes loose once in awhile, but seems to loosen itself more whenever the weather goes out of normal. If it does this and my car won't start, I have to put the hood up and press the ground wire inward and the car will start. This gets very frustrating after awhile. Just tighten it up and this may solve your problem.

I have a 2003 pontiac sunfire that runs hot and then is fine for a couple weeks . have put it in the shop several time .Any ideas?

Difficult...

Running hot would come down to a blocked radiator, a collapsed hose, a faulty temperature sensor or a cylinder head/gasket problem.

it could also be the gauge or even a bad earth on a temperature sensor.

Does your car exhibit any signs of overheating .. steam .. boiling radiator ... rough running?

It's strange that it runs fine for a couple of weeks and then runs hot. To me that suggests a temperature sensor/thermostat problem coupled with the outside air temperature.

What did the workshop suggest?

My 2002 Pontiac Sunfire needs a major tune up, cataletic converter, sensor, etc. Where do I begin if I want to do some of the work myself? It would cost me $1,000. at

what symptoms, dead car, runs bad, what?
well do the tune up, (cars for dummies read that) i didnt name book. sorry.
then scan it , its free to cars and post the DTC errros.
if a sensor is bad, it will tell you. it bad. using codes.
if sensor really is bad replace it, if wires to it bad, fix those..
the CAT if not clogged leave it be, if must pass smog its still last.
next time post engine, can fix them unless you learn what it is.
2.2L or 2.4L??????
LE or GT body>?
see>?
see the parts here, no reason to guess where the are.
for free
see engine here, (i guessed size)

http://www.newgmparts.com/auto-parts/2002/pontiac/sunfire/engine/?trim=se&engine=2-4l-l4-gas

scan it and report the codes. or its all just guessing and money down the drain.

2002 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2l engine lopes when ac is on.

I just found the problem and fixed it on my wifes 2002 2.2 sunfire. The car runs great but when a/c is on and at a red light the engine hunts up and down and wants to lurch forward.Being a mechanic I scanned the car and replaced the (IAC), Idle Air Control motor. While in park & a/c on it ran much better but still had problem in gear. Anyway after a year of playing with this problem I found the solution. The plugin on the a/c compressor (the high side sensor). The little 3 wire plug. These wires are very small and maybe because of heat & or vibration broke down and worked and didnt work at times. Anyway I changed this and have ice cold air almost immediately and the car never misses a beat when the a/c is on..Chevy OEM part # is 88988301 and the cost on july21 2011 in B.C canada was$103.43. I never come on these sites but was frustrated and I hope Ive helped someone fix their problem as well .Pls email me if this fixed your problem as well.. Addy is DFENSOM@TELUS.NET

The drive belt on our 1998 Pontiac Sunfire keeps breaking. We have fixed it 4 times. The first by a paid mechanic which last like a week and then we have fixed it the other times. This has lasted anywhere...

The spring loaded belt tensioner should examined closely. They have a tendency to cause the belt to track crooked when they start to fail. You should not see any of the coil spring that is mounted behind the tensioner.

2005 pontiac sunfire rear defrost doesn't work

sounds like a broken grid(the lines across the rear window) or thepower wire has broke off the window
to check this you need some FINE STEEL WOOL
turn the rear defrost on and move the steel wool across the grid not up and down slowly and litely if there is a break in the grid the steel wool will SPARK then mark it keep checking there could be more then one break
then you will need a repair kit
hope this helps

The key wont turn at the final point to crank the car, last year my tumble broke, i had it fixed but when it broke i couldnt move the key at all, its not doing thay this time, 2 days ago i went to the...

Not an exact solution, but perhaps information that might lead to one.

1.Replaced the tumblers? I believe I would replace the entire ignition switch this time. It's my belief that the body of the ignition switch is worn inside, and will keep damaging the tumblers.

2.Do you have a tilt steering wheel? It's best to keep the steering column in straight line when starting the car, then tilt the wheel to where you want, after the car is started. When the steering column is in a tilted position, it puts undue strain on the ignition key switch, and the mechanism the ignition key switch operates, on GM vehicles.

This mechanism, consists of a half moon gear on the ignition key switch, that turns inside a 'Planetary' gear. I used the term 'Planetary', as the gear shape is hard to describe. It resembles an oblong loop, shaped like the number 9, with gear teeth on the inside bottom of the loop. This 'Loop' rotates, when the gear teeth of the ignition key switch, engage the teeth on the loop, and pushes a rod, or retracts the rod. The rod goes down the side of your steering column, and turns on, or turns off an ignition switch, located at the bottom left side of the steering column.

Having the steering wheel tilted, puts a strain on the ignition key switch internals, the oblong loop can break, and/or gear teeth can be stripped off.

ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON WHEN RUNNING.

My engine is on ALL the time as well...I've taken it to a shop 3 times in the past 3 months, and it's always the same thing. The gas cap wasn't on tight enough.
