Question about 1995 Toyota Camry

Automatic shift lever will not move even after overide button pushed car was under 11/2 feet of water got notor running with a little smoke from under hood but shift lever will not move it moved with overide button a few weeks ago

Well given the fact that any insurance company would deem this vehicle a "total loss" I take it you know you are trying to revive a dead horse.
Have you drained the transmission.
Manually remove the shift linkage and shift it by hand at the transmission. This should give you operation of trans if it does then work on the system prior to transmission.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to automatic transmission shift lock control switch. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid causing the transmission shift lever to be physically locked in the PARK position. Important: Depress the button on the side of the shift lock actuator. With the button is depressed, cycle the plastic straw within the shift lever 3 to 5 times. The straw should move smoothly and freely except near the top of the travel where additional force will be required to mechanically actuate the park lock mechanism inside of the shift lock actuator. If there is stick/slip or abnormal friction while cycling the plastic straw or if the straw is altogether stuck in the lever, the entire control assembly (shifter and shift lock actuator) needs to be replaced. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement . If there is no abnormal friction, replace the shift lock actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Actuator Replacement .

The gear shifter on my 1998 Pontiac SE coupe will not unlock so I can take the car out of park


Do you have column or floor shifter ?
All automatic transaxle models use an electric park lock system. Within the housing assembly, a lock cylinder is connected to an actuator which rotates and engages on the electric park lock solenoid. When the floor-shift lever is not in the park position, the actuator disengages from the electric park lock solenoid slider. This allows the lock cylinder to move to the lock position. With the shift lever in PARK and the lock cylinder in LOCK, the actuator cam is positioned against the electric park lock solenoid slider. This prevents the shift lever from shifting out of the PARK position.
The column-shift automatic transaxle model uses a flexible cable actuator instead of an electric park lock system. One end of the cable is attached to the gate assembly. The other end of the cable is attached to the column mounted housing assembly. This system functions similarly to the floor-shift ignition lock system.
The manual transaxle model uses a push button lock cylinder. A clutch start switch is used. The clutch pedal must be pressed before the engine will crank. Refer to Park Lock System Check .

Came out of store, got in, key in button pushed, WON'T START and can't get key out.


Put shift lever in Park or Neutral and try to move key back to rest position where you should be able to remove it. If the shift lever won't move, look for a little tabbed-over hole near the console where the shift lever is that you can push down on the button underneath to release the shift lever and put it into Park. Make and model of car would be useful for obtaining other hints.

nuetral safety switch has issues or the button is not depressed at the brake lever--if u go under and look it can be seen and felt--press it in to start car

Hi there,

Most modern automatic cars require the driver to depress the brake pedal first, to allow releasing the gear out of Park.

Some automatic transmissions also provide an 'overide' switch near the gear lever, to allow manual release of the gear lever.

If neither of the above resolve this, then you will need to check the operation of your brake switch, mounted on the brake pedal.

• The transmission range switch
With the ignition in the ON position, battery voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The transmission range switch provides a path to ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid in the PARK position. With the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid energized the shift lever is mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. When the shift lever is out of the PARK position the controlled ground contacts in the transmission range switch open. This prevents the automatic transmission shift lock solenoid from energizing when the vehicle is out of the PARK position.

How can i get it to shift to neutral


You need to post what make of vehicle this is and whether it is an Automatic or stick shift.

In general, the brake pedal must be pressed for an Automatic to be shifted away from Park. In most stick shifts, the neutral is available after pressing in on the clutch.

For Automatics requiring the pressing of the brake pedal, an interlock switch is on the brake pedal lever under the dash. The switch can be knocked out of place by feet or even broken by the drivers feet striking it.

The idea is for the gearshift and brake pedal to be "interlocked" so the brakes are applied before the gearshift can be moved. This requires the shift linkage to be adjusted or "timed" to line up for the electric signal produced by the brake pedal switch. There is also a similar system to prevent the starter from working when the gears are not in Park or neutral.

In the case of a car like a Corvette, you would push down on the stick shift before the trans will engage neutral. This was made so you would not be able to over rev the engine by missing a gear.

My shift lever will not move from park even afetr appling the brakes


There is a little black cap beside the shifter, you can't miss it. Pop the cap off with your key, and inside there will be a button, push that button down and hold it there, with the brakes applied. Now the shifter will work.

I turn off the car, but key will not come out of ignition. Lock on shifter doesnt work. I can shift without pushing button on shifter. This is an automatic.


We had this problem on 06 and it is the shift button that doesn't pop out. You may be able to pull it out so you can remove the key for now. We had ours fixed under warranty (replaced)
