Question about 1996 Ford Ranger SuperCab

93 Ford Ranger won't start. Fuel pump not coming

93 Ford Ranger won't start. Fuel pump not coming on because the fuse for the fuel pump pops when ignition is turned on even when the power is disconected from the pump.

Pump runs when jumpered strait from the battery so the problem does not seem to be related to the pump itself..

Where is the most likely location for this electical short? Can this type of problem be caused by the ignition switch itself? Any suggestions for diagnosing the problem?

on my ford ranger it ended up being the EEC relay. another relay next to the fuel pump relay. the correlation was when check engine light did not come on at initial turn of key that was the indicator.that the eec relay was the problem

I would locate the fuel pump relay, and replace it,it is most likely the relay,or the ecm,the ecm powers the relay, but the relay is most likely the problem.

Actually, I already replaced the fuel pump relay and it didn't help. There is a 20 amp fuse that blows every time I turn on the ignition (even if the pump is disconnected). This fuse is identified as a fuel pump fuse.

Also I get continuity between the red and black wires that connect to the fuel pump. Seems like these are shorted out somewhere. I get continuity at these wires even if the ignition is off. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong but I don't think I should be getting continuity between these two wires at the fuel pump end.

Also, what is the ECM (Does that stand for electrical control module?) Is it another relay or something else?

This ecm is the electronic control module, the computer,it is very possible it is in the computer,Try this,un plug the injector harness from the engine, and try and put the fuse in,if it does not blow the fuse, then one of the injectors is shorted out

OK I'll try that and get back to you. It may be tomorrow. I have to get some more fuses.

Why want my 93 ford ranger pick up start without pouring gas into the intake fuel pump want come on unless hot wired straight to batt

There is a fuel shut off switch (inertia fuel shut off-opens on impact) in the wiring between the fuel pump relay (in the under-hood fuse/relay box) and the gas tank. It may have opened. I don't know where it is located, it may be behind a kick panel under the dash. You may have to ask someone where it is.

The fuel pump fuse is a 20amp fuse, also in the engine compartment fuse/relay box. This fuse and it's wire is the power feed for the fuel pump relay.

Refresh my memory, What have you done to the car beside replacing fuel filter? Do you have a fully charged battery? Are you getting spark to all cylinders? Are you getting fuel? I can help you if you tell me what is wrong. Don't assume it's the fuel pump cause there is so much in between but we can see if your Fuel Pump is working. Open your gas tank and have someone turn the car on but without starting it. You should hear a hum for about 2 to 3 seconds.
This means your pump is working. Now you need to find out what is your fuel pressure? A good number is between 65Lbs. and 40 lbs.
Let me know how you make out I'll be on line all day today.

Fuel pump on my 93 ford ranger will not run and the check engine light will not come on when you turn the key on. Just put a new fuel pump on the truck. Any ideas on where to go next???

if u took the bed off to change the fuel pump make sure u hook the ground back up to the frame the ground should be on the driver side behind the tank,u need to change the fuel pump relay when u change a fuel pump because it could be bad to cause the first pump to quit working. not the right amount of volts or to much volts, the relay is under the hood in the fuse box,

Fuel pump wont come on

bad ground wire? worst case you can run your own swicth to the pump but this woud be run off the ignition so the key must be on . is it in your tank or exturnal on the frame of the truck?

No fuel

You may have put the filter on backwards. If you did I might have ruined the fuel pump. Whether or not you did, test the wires that run to the pump. If they are getting power, you need to replace the pump. If not, start checking fuses and relays.
