It could sounds a bit strange to you, but I ask you to check this out.
It is possible that your transmission fluid filter is not installed correctly or there is a problem with its O-ring.

I have seen such a problem on Econoline vans, the engine just stalls as soon as you put it in Reverse.

Remove the transmission oil pan and make sure the filter is secured in place.

If it stalls only on Reverse, I am still convinced it is a transmission issue.Make sure you installed the correct filter application. If it is not a filter issue I mentioned in my first reply, then it could be a converter , pump or other transmission component issue.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

ok but it only does it once in awhile not all the time sometimes it won't do it say out of 5 times it would do it maybe 2 or 3 times the truck also was only droven 500 miles per year are you pretty shure it can be the filter in the trans because I have a guy wanting to buy it and I need to get iit fixed so tomorrow I will change the filter and the fluid

if that is the problem all I know is I am tired of buying things to find out it is not the problem

    Thanks for your response!!

As i cannot Diagnose the Car, these might be the Reasons. If that is not Filter, then more often it is a Problem with Transmission .Few other reasons could be IAC Valve, Vacuum Line, Distributor Cap.

I am Sorry, but it needs to be Properly Diagnosed for all the above mentioned Factors. But, as i said, Filter and Transmission ( I doubt this one more as the Problem is only in reverse ) are the Main Reasons.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

My truck dies in reverse.

It sounds to me like you have an internal vacuum leak in your transmission.

1989 ford bronco idles low and dies when stuck in reverse

Check the fuel pressure. If good, then see if there is vacuum leak with a vacuum gauge. If good take the idle control valve off and see if there is a lot of grim inside. Or it may be the mass air flow meter maybe bad. Try cleaning it with some mass air flow cleaner. See if it idles better with intake cleaner being sprayed in the intake with it running. First see if it runs a little better with the mass air flow unplugged. If so then the sensor is bad.

Do this.
Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Cold start valve or injector

there is an idle control valve on the intake plenum right by the throttle body air inlet

duck tape on the air intake. I just fixed mine. There is a crack on the intake that lets too much air in when you put it in drive that makes the car stall. Try it it works.
