Question about 2000 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

2004 GMC Sierra 5.3L engine. Using excessive coolant; no external leaks. Passed compression test. Intake gaskets replaced. Residue found inside the intake and heads from burnt coolant. Suspect it may be a leaking throttle body. Please confirm.

Put the die in your rad and go for a 5 mile ride now use a cheep black lite $3.00 at lowes the leak will show up. good luck CJ

I have a coolant leak

The first thing you need to check is for visible leaks, once you turn your vehicle on, there have to be some kind of leaks, pay attention since if the leak drop on top of the manifold, it will evaporate and you won't notice it.
Another thing to look for is excessive heat, with the vehicle on, put yourself in front of the vehicle, if you feel an excessive amount of heat, then probably the head gasket needs replacing, and it evaporate the coolant.
So as you can see, if there are no visible leaks, it is probably a problem from the inside of the engine.

Coolant leak but no sign of leak

Do your windows fog up when you use defroster? Any residue on the inside of winshield? Is the carpet damp under either floor mat? These are signs of a leaking heater core. If no to all of these check at tail pipe when running for excessive water (depending on the climate if it's cold out of coarse there will be some condensation) if so does is leave a residue on your hand? This could be the sign of a blown head gasket, blown intake gasket or cracked head. I don't know what engine you have but, Chevy 3.4 engines are known to blow intake gaskets.

Coolant leak 05 denali

I will assume as usual that it has the 5.7L engine. The common cause for a coolant leak in these truck are the intake manifold. It either leaks externally or internally or both this is a common problem with this engine. You have to replace the intake gaskets. This a fairly big job. First check your engine oil if the level has risen and if the oil smells like anti freeze or looks like a milkshake kinda foamy then the chances are good that your intake is leaking. If all else fails you will have to do a coolant pressure test and you will seee the leak probably. It could also be your cylinder head gaskets but the most likely cause is the intake gasket. $100.00 for the gasket kit and about 5-6 labour. Change your oil & filter before you start it after you replace the gaskets. Then if your leak goes away change your oil & filter again about a week later to ensure you get all the coolant out of the engine oil this is very harmfull to the bearings in the engine.

I am losing engine coolant somewhere internaly. Truck is running hot. And my heater is not heating interior of truck

Check for external leaks first then check the engine dipstick to see if engine oil is milky looking. If so the coolant is leaking into the crankcase. If dipstick looks okay it could be leaking at the intake manifold. If it is leaking at the manifold coolant can be drawn into the cylinders and go out the exhaust. Other possibility is blown head gasket, cracked cylinder head or cracked engine block. The reason the heater is not working may be that the level of coolant in the system is not high enough to supply the heater core with warm coolant. Could also have air in the system. Internal coolant leaks will usually not get any better, only worse.

I have a 2003 GMC Denali with Codes P171 & P174 lean on both banks. What is the problem? Fuel pump?

More likely it's the intake manifold gasket leaking. They can become flat and **** air in passed the gasket, causing a lean condiiton.

Oil in over coolant tank

If there is oil inside the coolant liquid that is the head gasket.

Check first if oil can leak into the coolant tank from the cap.

Usually when you get oil into the coolant liquid you have an head gasket problem, do a compression test, or buy the home tester below. Guides - HOW TO TEST FOR A FAILED HEAD GASKET
