The top on my convertible does not go up or down even when I got power to the motors but when I took that motors off and conected them to a 12V source they rotate to both sides

The low power may be the issue or the ground because when I powered the motors directly to the batery they run pretty strong in both derections does anyone have an idea on how to test the relay?

This help me to find a short on my circuit Thanks

Check your motors for bad grounds on the vehicle.

Also, you may want to replace the relay if its not passing enough amperage. Although you did say powering the motors directly didnt work. Which would rule out low power.

Testing the relay can be done off the car with a 12 volt battery and leads running to one of your motors. You just need a handful of wires *jumper cables it relay leads are big enough?

heavy gauge wire with aligator clips or a similar plug with wires still in it would be ideal.

You can also check the socket in the car that the relay sits in and make sure it isnt corroded or covered with arcing soot. A shot of electrical contact cleaner and a small wire brush should clean it up nicely.

Keep me posted on your progress.

    Thanks!

The motor power circuit may have an issue.. Check firstly the fue and relay if one is damaged it may not be getting enough power.... Secondly chexk the gear drive the motor connects too... If one of the gears is stuck the motor won't turn.. You may need to take it apart,, a little oil or geease on the piviot points of the gear not the teets should fix it

I have a 2007 mustang convertible top that will not go down. with key on windows go to park down position but no hydraulic pump sound checking fuses to ensure good power. where should i begin?

Principles of Operation
Convertible top operation is controlled by the smart junction box (SJB). When the convertible top raise/lower switch is operated, the SJB commands the front and rear windows to the full down position. Window operation is disabled while the convertible top raise/lower switch is being operated. When the SJB receives a full down input for both rear windows, it commands the appropriate relay closed to raise or lower the convertible top. If the SJB does not receive a full down input signal for both rear windows, the convertible top operation is disabled.

The convertible top hydraulic system uses a 12 volt reversible pump and motor assembly. When active, the pump uses hydraulic pressure to extend the hydraulic lift cylinders to raise the convertible top, or retract the hydraulic lift cylinders to lower the convertible top. The convertible top motor/pump assembly is equipped with a thermal circuit breaker. The circuit breaker typically resets after 5 minutes depending on the ambient temperature. The thermal circuit breaker cannot be repaired and must be installed as a unit with the motor/pump assembly. In the event of a hydraulic system failure, the convertible top cannot be operated manually.

Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  1. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool operating manual.
  1. Carry out the scan tool data link test. If the scan tool responds with:
    • CAN or ISO circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 .
    • No response/not equipped for SJB; refer to Section 419-10 .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out self-test diagnostics for the SJB.
  1. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Smart Junction Box (SJB) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.

2010 sebring convertible top won't go down

when you are looking at the motor to your top, on the right side were the wires are coming out of the end. you need to tack that off, you only need that little piece on the inside of that cap is where the problem lies. cheap workmanship there are to fuses and two wires that create a path for current to bring power from your relay (basically it is built very weak, and with age and wear the already cheap weak wired motor wires come loose)there are two wires can anybody guess what for? that's right up and down....so if you have tried everything and can't seem to understand why it still doesn't work I asure you this is the problem

1992 VW Cabriolet convertible power windows will not go down.

There is an easy way to determine whether this is the switch or the motor itself. Remove the door panel and locate the wiring that goes to the window motor. Disconnect the wiring harness and apply 12V to the terminals on the motor. If it moves smoothly, the problem is most likely the switch or possibly a relay. If the motor does not move with 12V applied to the terminals, then the motor itself is defective.

1999 vw cabrio convertible top doesn't works

You have to put hydraulic fluid (power steering fluid will work too) in the convertible top motor. The motor is in the trunk, on the left hand side, under a panel. Pull the panel off and that is the electric motor for the top. You'll see a reservoir where you put in the fluid. Put in the fluid and you'll be good to go.

Sounds like the switch is bad. Also check the relays. You might have one for up and one for down.

Convertible Top "Sensor"??

Hello,
I'm sorry, the message I got was to clarify my problem, and the problem was this: The power top on my 2008 TT Roadster would neither go up nor down via electronic control, and the emergency remedy, a.k.a. release the pressure on the pistons via wild goose chase through a hole in the driver's side deep in the trunk. REMEDY:
I took the car to the dealership and they replaced the "convertible top flap motors". The top works, but they laughed when I asked for an emergency pair, even though the service manager told me that the emergency piston release remedy recommended in the manual was pretty much useless. I must say that aside from my bitter words about the problem, and my consternation, there are few things that are as relaxing as a cruise around the Croton Reservoir system with the top down.

Does anyone know where the motor for the convertible top is located on a 01 pontiac firebird?

its actually a very intricate system of motors and support arms i wouldnt try to do it yourself. pontiacs are notorious for having problems with those type of motors like windows, headlights, and convertable tops. as a matter of fact i had a pontiac sunfire with the same problem i just got the convertable top up and left it that way cause it got stuck half way up once so stop using it till you get it fixed or you might have a permanent convertable.
