Ok I am trying to take the EGR valve off of my 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis 4.6L. What are the steps to taking it off? Do I need to remove other parts before I can get to it?

SOURCE: 1993 mercury grand marquis egr not functioning

The most common problem for your car with that condition is plugged ports where the egr feeds into the intake. You must remove the throttle body and elbow between the throttle body and intake, you will see a passage that is most likely plugged. You can clean it all out with a screwdriver or similar but it must be taken apart to get to it.

SOURCE: 1993 grand marquis water pump

IF YOU PLAN TO DO THIS YOURSELF, IT'S A FAIRLY SIMPLE JOB, JUST TIME COMSUMING. FIRST THING BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE. BEG, BORROW, BUY OR WHATEVER A SHOP MANUAL ON THE 93 GRAND MARQUIS. CHILTONS OR HAYNES ARE GREAT, GET THEM AT ANY AUTO PARTS STORE. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THEM IN TWO-THREE DAYS TOPS. THEN YOU'RE IN BUSINESS, BECAUSE THEY BOTH HAVE THE COMPLETE TEARDOWN AND REBUILD OF THE WATER PUMP WITH ALL THE TRICKS AND CHECKS TO DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME! COST ABOUT $15.00, WORTH EVERY CENT IF YOU DO THINGS YOURSELF ON THE CAR. THE BOOK GIVES PICTURES AND STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON EVERYTHING. YOU'LL LOVE IT AND FINISH THE JOB IN NO TIME AND HAVE IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. GO FOR IT! GOOD LUCK! IF YOU NEED MORE HELP,REPLY TO ARCLIGHT1217

SOURCE: how to remove the egr valve on a 1993 mercury

Jack up the passengers side of the car, get a 1 1/16" wrench break loose the fitting to the manifold, hold a 24 mm wrench on the fitting to the manifold, loosen the flare nut on the tube. Then using a 10 mm socket, about 2 inches long, loosen the two nuts under the EGR valve, then take the both out, remove the vacuum hose to the top of the EGR valve, and the sensing line from the small tube. then completely remove the flare nut from the orifice fitting on the manifold. BE CAREFUL with the tube, do not bend it or break it, you may find PB blaster useful the night before on a cold engine loosen these fittings. Once the EGR valve is out, remove the orifice out of the manifold, remove the tube from the EGR valve, again be careful, mark the tube to EGR position before pulling this off, because the top fitting to EGR needs tightened before you put it back in, it will make the lower fitting difficult if you do not line it up right, dry fitting from under the car is helpful, mark it, and then tighten the top. Clean out the tube, be careful not to bend the little tube, either inside or outside the larger tube, it sticks out inside. Clean the orifice, clean the manifold face carefully not to score it, check for blockage there too. Apply anti-seize to the orifice, put it back in the manifold, then apply anti-seize to the bolts for the EGR valve, and the flare nuts both ends. Apply some silicon to the EGR valve face, just enough to hold the gasket in place, put the new gasket on, start the bolts two turns in the gasket, it will hold them in place, then start them in the manifold, then start the lower flare fitting to orifice, tighten the top bolts, and then the flare nut, connect the vacuum line, connect the sensing line. I just recently did this process, it works, if have other EGR issues, the valve is the easiest.

Sounds like a sticking EGR valve or partially open, try removing vacumm hose at valve and plug vacumm line, if no results remove valve and make a gasket of a soda can to match outter edge but no center holes install if fixes you need a new EGR valve

2002 Grand Marquis DPFE and CLEN EGR Ports

First go to a independent auto shop to get a price will be much less, however it is a problem getting to some egr valves so it takes time and that costs money. The egr valve can be cleaned but you have to know how to remove it, but they most likely quoted you the price of a new DPFE and New EGR valve so that’s a little more than half the cost the rest is labor. if you want to do it yourself by a hanes manual or get a subscription on alldatadiy.com to do it your self.
