Question about 1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT

1 Answer

Runs rough when cold, misfires, hesitates runs rich

Vehicle starts up just fines but does all of the above until it's completely warm. Usually after about 20 minutes of driving it runs just fine. The Mitsubishi dealer has had my car for two weeks now and can't figure it out. I had also had it two other shops prior to the dealership and they couldn't figure it out either. Everything is testing out just fine. They did tell me one of the capacitors on the ECU is leaking slightly but they sent the ECU somewhere and it also tested ok. I asked them to replace the capacitors but they wouldn't do it saying since the ECU is ok the caps shouldn't be the problem. I have a feeling replacing the caps may help this issue. Any suggestions or thougths?

All new OEM plugs and wires were installed about a week ago. The throttle position sensor, coolant temp sensor and fuel filter were also all replaced. The dealer has tested every senser and said they all test fine.

Spark plugs? Their resistance may change a bit after they're warm. Replace with oem.

misfire can be from plugs and also from injectors. It it is fine when it warms up I would be looking at injector tip problems from the cold.

My ford windstar 2003 hesitates during cold weather or wet conditions. But good during idle. Some time shows blinking engine light.

The flashing and rough running is to to a misfire or misfires cause by arcing due to moisture on ignition components. Eventually these misfires can lead to other problems such as damage catalytic converter. Start by identifying which cylinder(s) is/are misfiring. The arching can be reproduced with a spray bottle filled with soapy water. Spray the ignition components (wires, coils, distributor cap...)and look for the vehicle to idle rough. Replace any faulty component.

check that the EGR valve is not sticking or has a vacuum leak. This valve will not operate until the engine is warm.

check also the engine coolant temp sensor (ECT). This sensor tells the engine computer that the engine has warmed up, so if it is faulty, it could be sending wrong information to the computer. If the sensor is disconnected, wires to it broken, or faulty in full cold mode, it will tell the computer that the engine is very cold, like -40F. The computer will schedule fuel for cold conditions. This is usually way too much fuel for a warm engine and it will rich misfire, idle rough, and be difficult to start warm.

The ECT has two wires going to it and is dedicated to sending information to the engine computer. It has nothing to do with your dash gauge that shows coolant temp. That sender has only one wire and is dedicated to the coolant temp gauge.

Change your oxygen sensors - they're responsible for feedback that the computer uses to determine the air/fuel mixture. They usually are good for about 60k miles and then start to go downhill. When they get to a point that the computer won't trust them, it ignores them and runs on preprogrammed fuel maps that run excessively rich (too much fuel) to safeguard the engine. You've probably seen a decrease in fuel mileage as well. And the O2 sensors have to be up around 900 degrees before they'll work - the car ignores them until then. That's why you run fine after a cold start but run rough once the car is warmed up.

The O2 sensors you want to change are in the exhaust system between the engine and catalytic converters (the "pre-cat" sensors). There are O2 sensors after the cats as well, but those are used comparatively to determine how well the cats are functioning. The primaries are the ones used for fuel mixture. If it's been this way for a few weeks or so, I'd put new spark plugs in as well - rich fuel conditions can foul them and contribute to the rough running.

replace the CKP and the truck will need to go to a shop and have the "crankshaft variation relearn" performed. the misfire may or may not go away, and that will need to be addressed also.
