Can also be the timing chain , there is a small arm that is spring loaded with a plastic bushing that wares and then you will get a ticking or chattering sound <!-- from fixya rte -->

Worn valve lifter, or the rocker arm needs to be tightened a little.
Have to remove valve covers to see if one is loose.
If it is the lifter, the whole top part of the engine has to be taken off to get at it.

2003 pontiac grand am ticking no engine light on. what could it be

Camshaft wear/lifter not operating/damaged valve components.
Usually due to engine sludge from lack of servicing/wrong oil grade for conditions/short runs giving internal water vapour in oil.

There is a ticking noise everytime my car is on that sounds like the turn signal noise but theres no pattern or order to the ticking. i thought the hazard switch was bad, what could the ticking noise be?

It could be a relay clicking under the dash due to a bad ground circuit somewhere in the vehicle. It would be best to have a professional put an ear to it.

If sound comes from under the dash, it might be an hvac actuator that is having a problem? Sometimes you can put your hand on it and feel the vibration? Sometimes with a relay, you can do the same thing.

Have a 1996 pontiac grand am and upon acceleration will hesitate

If you hear a ticking sound while you are driving, it is most likely a loose spark plug...otherwise it could be a problem with the fuel delivery system

you can pull the valve covers and inspect the rocker arms, but you may have a bad main or rod bearing. im leaning toward the main bearing being spun, at least.
