Question about 1986 Jaguar XJSC

2 Answers

I have a 1990 Jaguar XJS v12 with a lack of heat. In either auto or man mode, the upper vents blow only cool/cold air even thought the thermostat is set to 80 or 85. There is warm/hot air coming from the lower vents in the foot wells, but only cold up above even with the air/face slider all the way to the red up arrow, and thoughts. The a/c works fine and cools even freezes one when it is acivated by setting the thermostat to 60 or 65.

I could understand that the core could be bad, but then why do I get heat in the foot wells?

Your heatercore is likely bad.

Hello, Why would I get heat in the vents by the foot wells if the heater core were bad?

If the foot wells are warm, then you could have a stuck flap or bad actuator that directs the flap that directs the air flow. The venting is behind the dash panel. THe heatercore covering also has hose that is for different directions of warm air flow.

How do I diagnose which of these is the problem? Where is the actuator? Is this a cable or electronic control? I can get to the air/face slider as it it under the radio and is not too hard to access. Is it opossible a cable is broken that controls the air flow from the outside or heater?

First you will have to find out if it's vacuum controlled or electronical. If electronical, then there is a motor that moves it. If vaccuum controlled, then there is an actuator that is attached to the flap itself. Try moving the flap by hand to see if it moves freely.

where is this flap on a 1990 XJS? and how is it accessed?

Hello, I am going outside to see what I can by looking at the slider switch. Do you have a shop manual for this?

If you need a manual, you can go to autozone.com and register, then login, choose year, make model, and then choose view repair manual.

I would start with a tune up, then isolate any symptoms other than lack of power if it persists, like rough idle, sputtering, jerking, engine trouble codes, etc.

No heat jaguar 88 xj6 fan wont turn on cool air out the defrost vent

I have the similar problem with both my Jaguars, one is a 1988 Jaguar XJS, the other is a 1987 Jaguar XJ6, both blow COLD air out some vents while it blows warm air for heat. I heard it had something to do with the cold air blowing as a dehumidifier, I don't know if this is true, but it is really annoying to have both cold and warm air blowing when I need heat in these cold Canadian winters. If you find out please drop this website a note and let us know how you solved it. thanks.
