Question about 2002 Lexus SC 430

2 Answers

I have a 2002 SC430 problem with the alignment. The car has 50,000 miles on it and i bought it used at 46,000. For about 2-3 months the car was driving fine. The car now ALWAYS pulls pretty hard to the right, most often on side streets. The highway isn't as bad for some reason. I've gotten the car aligned TWICE at the Lexus dealership and they've told me that the tires are the problem bc they aren't "runflat", but the tires were new when i bought the car. What should i do? Replace the tires? ive only driven 4,000 miles. Rotate them?? Please help! My tires are FALKEN ZIEX 329. Thanks, Todd

Let me 1st explain about right pull on the highweay and on city streets, all streets and roads are "crowned" this means that the street is high in the center than on the sides for water drainage, so a slight pull is nothing to worry about, if u feel the you really need to apply left turn pressure to keep in a straight line then yes u have a problem, the 1st thing to do is have a 4 wheel alignment done, this is makes sure the front and rear wheels are "tracking " true, also have the tires rotated front to rear, you are due anyway, instruct the dealer to please road test the car after the alignment is done and the tires rotated to make sure the car doesn't pull to the right, also tell the dealer to make sure the steering wheel is centered for road crown as i explained above and that average road crown be considered in the alignment settings, then come in after the work is done and road test the car with a front end alignment technician to make sure the job was done righ, don't replace the tires, just rotate front to rear, if u follow the instructions to u and you pass this on to the dealer you will be a happy camper.

Thanks! I actually had the 4 wheel alignment done and they "claimed" everything was fixed but they then said (after the second time i brought in complaining) that the tires were the issue and didn't really recommend anything. i think your idea of the road test on the "crowned" streets makes sense by rotating the tires front to back bc i've heard that the tires wear quickly on SC430s. The car is definitely pulling hard right though, enough so that i have to steer left to compensate, pretty much all the time. if the rotation doesn't work and they recommend new (different) tires, do you think i have a legitimate case for them paying for the tires? or at least a portion of them? I don't have a warranty though but that's lemon law if the car is defective. Right? I know it's just your opinion here, but i could definitely use some advice. Thanks again!

OK guess you can't call, based on my experience getting the dealer to buy you new tires is not really very easy, I can explain why but to type out all the reasons would just take to much time.

There are alignment adjusters on the lexus sc430. 2 adjusters per wheel. Alignment mechanics are not experts on all make of cars and as such need guidance. My sc430 does not eat tires anymore

My odometer is 110,000 that a subaru 2008 outback is that bad,i bought only last week

  • Not to bad. Outback is a good vehicle. With so many miles and it only being a 2008 I am inclined to think this was a highway traveled vehicle more than in town. This is good because highway miles is far better on a vehicle than in town miles. Some maintenance you need to either confirm has been done or inspected to see if it needs to be done. May also have some warranty with it to but warranties often do not cover preventative maintenance.
  1. Transmission flush - 20,000 miles
  2. Transmission Filter - 50,000 miles
  3. Radiator flush. - 30,000 miles
  4. Air filter. - As needed.
  5. Oil change. - 3 months or 3,000 miles - usually right away with new vehicle.
  6. Emissions clean. - 25,000 miles
  7. Brake inspection. Right away with new vehicle.
  8. Serpentine belt - 50,000 miles inspect often.
  9. Alignment check - Check is often free.
  10. Tires.
